The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is seeking a qualified and experienced Board-Certified Psychiatrist to provide comprehensive psychiatric care across inpatient, outpatient, adult, child/adolescent, and/or forensic settings. Responsibilities include evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and overall coordination of care for individuals with psychiatric disorders. This position is a Locum Tenens (independent contractor) role that requires strong clinical expertise, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary treatment teams.

Minimum Requirements

Enrollment in CMS and maintenance of unconditional Medicare/Medicaid provider status (OPRA‑compliant).

Board Certification in Adult Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). If working primarily with youth, certification in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry required.

Minimum of 3 years post‑residency clinical psychiatry experience.

Enrollment with NYS Medicaid as a Billing Provider or ORA Prescriber.

Enrollment in NYS I‑STOP/PMP.

Ability to obtain and maintain hospital privileges if required.

Responsibility for fees related to hospital privileges.

Agreement to assign insurance reimbursements for OMH patient care to OMH.

Active New York State medical license in good standing; must notify OMH of any changes.

Must meet OMH and Joint Commission credentialing and privileging requirements.

Ability to perform most clinical duties with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties

Provide ethical, safe, and high‑quality psychiatric care.

Conduct psychiatric evaluations, physical exams (when needed), and diagnostic assessments.

Review medical records, prior evaluations, and diagnostic tests.

Diagnose psychiatric disorders and develop treatment plans.

Prescribe medications and monitor treatment effectiveness.

Provide individual and group therapy.

Order diagnostic tests as needed.

Assess patients for admission, transfer, and discharge.

Collaborate with treatment teams, families, caregivers, and external providers.

Prepare accurate clinical documentation (progress notes, case histories, discharge summaries).

Attend staff meetings and participate in medical committees.

Ensure documentation meets OMH and regulatory standards.

Program & Team Responsibilities

Collaborate within multidisciplinary treatment teams.

Participate in treatment planning and care coordination.

Ensure continuity of care during transitions or community placements.

Provide POD (Physician On Duty) coverage when required.

Follow site‑specific OMH procedures and policies.

Utilize OMH‑approved systems for EMR and documentation.

Adult Psychiatry

Evaluate and treat adults 18+.

Conduct lethality assessments and forensic evaluations when needed.

Implement suicide precautions, restraint, and seclusion protocols when required.

Contract Details

Locum Tenens – Independent Contractor.

No overtime or paid breaks.

Must follow OMH scheduling and shift requirements.

No‑shows or late arrivals without notice may result in removal from the assignment.

OMH reserves the right to terminate the assignment for cause.

Compensation: $200.00 per hour
