Substation Senior Structural Engineer HDR is looking for a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our growing power delivery team.

Responsibilities

Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute structural engineering tasks for substation structural members, including rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.

Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute foundation design tasks for substation structures (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, etc.) using industry standard software.

Support physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials.

Prepare and/or review specifications for construction & materials.

Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to project team members.

Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables per HDR Quality Management Systems.

Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross‑train and share resources.

Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.

Work independently and lead, mentor, train, and/or supervise one or more Project Engineers, EIT’s, or CAD/Designers.

Lead multiple projects concurrently with teams in different locations.

Participate in project reviews and attend training seminars for further technical development.

Assist with developing technical papers/presentations showcasing HDR’s capabilities at conferences.

Some travel may be required.

Preferred / Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.

SE license or ability to obtain; preference for Hawaii and California.

10+ years of technical design experience on high‑voltage switchyard and substation projects up to 500kV.

Experience with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113 and other standards.

Proficient in design software (PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile).

Previous consulting firm experience.

Strong written and verbal communication; problem‑solving and collaboration skills.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience related to building design.

Professional Engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position.

Experience with AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or equivalent analytical software.

Ability to design and detail steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.

Understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis.

Previous experience at an architectural/engineering consulting firm.
