Position Overview Financial Fraud Unit: investigator responsible for investigating and prosecuting allegations of insurance fraud throughout the State of Colorado. The role conducts criminal investigations, verifies allegations through interviews and evidence gathering, serves the State Grand Jury, provides expertise to law enforcement and regulatory professionals, offers instructional services, technical advice, and training, and functions as a liaison among federal, state, and local agencies.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct independent verification of allegations through interviews and collection of evidence.

Serve the State Grand Jury and provide technical support to law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

Facilitate information sharing and coordination among federal, state, and local entities on insurance fraud matters.

Assist other units within the Financial Fraud Unit and Criminal Justice Section as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of professional investigative experience as a full‑time sworn detective or criminal investigator at the felony level for a government law enforcement agency, where filing felony‑level criminal cases in a criminal court as the lead investigator was the main function.

OR a combination of directly related education (e.g., Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology) and full‑time investigative experience totaling six years, including filing felony‑level cases as lead investigator.

Foreign degree holders must submit a translation/evaluation from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications

Lead investigator on a minimum of 50 felony‑level cases.

Presented a minimum of 10 felony‑level cases for filing in a criminal court.

Experience managing or leading large‑scale or complex felony investigations.

Certified Fraud Examiner credential (Association of Certified Fraud Examiners).

Complex investigative experience (e.g., Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, identity theft, organized crime, fraud investigations, forgery).

Undergraduate or graduate coursework in accounting, finance, or criminology.

Required Competencies

Demonstrated organizational skills, multi‑tasking, prioritization and meeting deadlines.

Experience managing or leading large‑scale or complex investigations.

Strong oral and written communication skills, including concise and effective communication.

Customer service and interpersonal skills, including teamwork.

Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.

Conditions of Employment

Thorough background investigation required prior to appointment.

Colorado P.O.S.T. certification at time of application, including physical and psychological evaluation if more than three years have passed.

Proficiency with a handgun, availability for travel within and outside Colorado, and willingness to work nights/weekends as needed.

Valid Colorado driver’s license and willingness to travel for trial support and investigative needs.

Position requires flexible work arrangements and occasional presence in Denver.

Participation in E‑Verify and Form I‑9 compliance.
