Fraud Investigator – Financial Fraud Unit
Location: Denver, CO. Salary: $77,120.00–$147,390.00. Position subject to the Hiring Freeze (Executive Order D 2025-009). The selected finalist will begin after January 1, 2026. Eligibility limited to Colorado state residents.
What You Will Do
Conduct criminal investigations, including interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence.
Evaluate and identify alleged insurance fraud meeting statutory definitions.
Serve the State Grand Jury and support its functions.
Provide specialized expertise to other law‑enforcement agencies.
Serve as a liaison between federal, state, and local law‑enforcement entities on insurance fraud matters affecting Colorado.
Assist other parts of the Financial Fraud Unit and Criminal Justice Section as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Six years of full‑time investigative experience in a felony‑level government law‑enforcement agency, including filing felony‑level criminal cases as lead investigator.
OR a combination of directly related education (e.g., Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology) and investigative experience equivalent to six years, with filing of felony‑level criminal cases as lead investigator.
Foreign degree holders must submit a credential evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
Lead investigator on 50 or more felony‑level cases.
Presented 10 or more felony‑level cases for filing in criminal court.
Experience managing or leading large‑scale or complex felony‑level investigations.
Certified Fraud Examiner credential from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Experience in complex investigations such as COCCA violations, identity theft, organized crime, theft/embezzlement, controlled substances, fraud investigations, or forgery.
Undergraduate or graduate coursework in accounting, finance, or criminology (include transcript).
Required Competencies
Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated experience managing or leading large‑scale or complex investigations.
Strong oral and written communication skills, including concise and effective communication.
Customer service and interpersonal skills, including teamwork.
Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
Conditions of Employment
Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment.
Candidates must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified at the time of application.
Must complete a physical and psychological evaluation if it has exceeded three years.
Must be proficient with a handgun and available for short‑notice travel within and outside Colorado.
Must be available to work nights and/or weekends when necessary.
Must possess a valid CO driver license and be willing to travel for trial support and investigative needs.
Colorado Department of Law participates in E‑Verify and will provide Form I‑9 information to the federal government.
