What to Expect
Tesla is hiring a test engineer for the operations of a state of the art battery pack cycle facility that validates the lithium-ion cells used in our vehicles. With industrial-scale electrical nameplate capacity, this is a vertically integrated facility where we have full technical ownership of software, mechanical, and electrical equipment that includes in‑house developed regenerative power supplies.
The successful candidate will manage battery packs coming in and out of the facility, debug hardware and firmware issues as needed to start a test and develop an expertise in lithium‑ion degradation modes to advise the cross‑functional team on the types of packs and tests to run.
What You’ll Do
Prepare battery packs for test by debugging hardware issues and configuring firmware, and working with technicians to direct physical setup and teardown
Work with the cross‑functional team to prioritize and schedule a queue of battery packs to be tested
Maintain and debug test facility software
Analyze data from packs under test for correct execution and health metrics
Decommission a battery pack that has finished testing and managing its teardown and/or failure analysis
Develop a deep understanding of lithium‑ion degradation modes through interaction with in‑house cell engineering experts
Detailed engineering of test equipment improvements
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related degree, or equivalent experience
Minimum of 1 year of related professional work experience, or extensive experience in related student engineering teams such as Formula SAE, Solar Car, or robotics clubs
Excellent organization, project management, and cross‑functional team skills
Experience developing software following object‑oriented principles. Specifically, software development, and data analysis experience in Python is preferred
Hardware debugging and troubleshooting experience. Experience gained through microcontrollers and embedded applications development is preferred
Experience with automotive communication buses like CAN, and automotive Ethernet
Hands‑on experience and understanding of lithium‑ion batteries and high‑voltage systems safety
Knowledge of lithium‑ion chemistry operating limits, and degradation modes

Expected Compensation $80,000 - $174,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
