Level 2 Telecommunications Field Engineer Location: UK (Field-Based)
Employment Type: Full-time
Role Purpose The Level 2 Field Engineer is responsible for advanced field support, installation activities, and escalation-level maintenance across a wide range of network technologies. This role combines hands‑on engineering work with mentoring responsibilities, supporting junior field staff while ensuring technical tasks are carried out to a high standard. The engineer will lead on complex fault resolution, supervise on‑site activity, and uphold engineering best practice throughout all deployments and service operations.
Key Responsibilities Field Support & Maintenance
Provide first‑line and escalation‑level maintenance across customer sites.
Attend faults promptly and ensure service‑level commitments are met wherever possible.
Carry out installation, commissioning, and testing duties on both project work and live network environments.
Participate in out‑of‑hours call‑out rota as required.
Maintain accurate and timely updates to internal service desks and project teams.
Take ownership of assigned issues and drive them through to resolution.
Technical Delivery
Lead the diagnosis and resolution of complex network, transmission, and infrastructure issues.
Install hardware including metal containment, racks, cable trays, and related fixtures.
Perform fibre and copper cable installation, termination, testing, labelling, and securing.
Complete continuity checks and optical/electrical measurements using industry‑standard test equipment.
Carry out AC/DC connections up to the point of energisation.
Execute structured cabling installations to required engineering standards.
Leadership & Supervision
Provide day‑to‑day guidance to junior engineers and contractors during field works.
Ensure work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with quality expectations.
Review and manage RAMS documentation and ensure compliance on‑site.
Conduct installation quality audits and oversee corrective actions when needed.
Deliver hands‑on coaching through practical workshops and field‑based guidance.
Act as the senior engineer on assigned projects, offering technical escalation support.
Project & Documentation
Produce clear, accurate engineering documentation and reports.
Support project teams with basic project coordination tasks where required.
Monitor KPIs and provide feedback on performance and service quality.
Perform site inspections for HSE compliance and safety verification.
Communication & Professionalism
Build strong, positive working relationships internally and externally.
Represent the organisation professionally at all customer and partner sites.
Maintain adherence to engineering standards, safety regulations, and operational procedures.
Adapt to business needs and remain flexible in both scheduling and workload.
About You
Strong background in the physical build and installation of telecoms or network infrastructure.
Advanced commissioning skills with hands‑on experience in transmission, optical, and IP environments.
Confident in fault finding across PDH/SDH/DWDM, IP networks, structured cabling, and high‑capacity data services.
Skilled in testing and validating circuits including 1G, 10G, 40G, and 100G.
Knowledgeable in AC/DC power systems, environmental monitoring, and supporting infrastructure.
Experience working with a broad range of network equipment from major vendors (e.g., optical transport, routing, and switching platforms).
Strong communication and customer‑facing abilities.
Excellent written English and capable of producing clear engineering reports.
Able to work effectively under pressure and support others constructively.
Competent with standard office software and digital reporting tools.
Able to manage workload independently and deliver to deadline.
Full, valid driving licence.
