Engineer - BESS Controls | Lead Level

Remote (Juno Beach, FL base) Duration:
12-month contract (November 2025 - November 2026) Schedule:
40 hours/week | Standard hours Compensation:
Up to $68/hr
Overview Our client, a Fortune 200 leader in clean energy, seeks a Lead HIL Test Engineer to own the Hardware-in-the-Loop test platform validating control software for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). You'll develop real-time plant models, run simulations at millisecond precision, and automate requirement-based test suites that ensure grid-scale battery systems perform flawlessly.
What You'll Do
Model the Plant:
Create/maintain Simulink/Simscape Electrical models for PCS/inverter, filters/transformer, battery/BMS; validate against site data
HIL Simulation:
Connect Schneider M580 PLC to Speedgoat via Modbus TCP; verify commands, telemetry, alarms, and fail-safe sequences
Author Tests:
Derive MiL/SiL/HIL cases for power/VAR control, ramp-rate, freq/volt response, SoC management, thermal derates, and fault scenarios
Automate Regression:
Implement scripted test suites with pass/fail metrics; integrate with Git and CI workflows
Defect Lifecycle:
Analyze logs, isolate root causes, file issues, verify fixes, maintain full traceability
Required Qualifications
B.S./M.S. in Electrical, Controls, Power, or Mechatronics Engineering
15+ years of engineering experience (Lead Level)
3-7+ years in embedded/controls test & validation with HIL
Strong MATLAB/Simulink skills (Simulink Test, Simulink Real-Time, Simscape Electrical)
Hands-on Speedgoat experience at ~1 ms base rates
PLC integration experience; Schneider M580 familiarity preferred
Protocols: Modbus/TCP and DNP3
Python and VBA scripting
Professional Engineering (PE) certificationExperience with utility-scale solar, BESS, wind, or hydrogen systems
Large-scale energy project planning and execution
