About the job Engineer-Level 4 - Lead (15+ Years) - HIL/BESS Controls (3WW34348) ⚡ HIL Controls Engineer - Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Overview of the Role Join a Fortune 200 clean energy leader to own their Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test platform that validates control software for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems. You'll work at the cutting edge of renewable energy technology, developing real-time plant models and ensuring BESS controllers perform flawlessly before deployment.
Build and operate HIL rigs: configure Simulink Real-Time on Speedgoat, map I/O harness, and manage deterministic scheduling at ~1 ms base rates
Create and maintain Simulink/Simscape Electrical models for PCS/inverter, filters/transformer, battery/BMS systems
Connect Schneider M580 PLC to Speedgoat via Modbus TCP; verify commands, telemetry, time sync, alarms/events, and fail-safe sequences
Author requirement-based tests for power/VAR control, ramp-rate, frequency/voltage response, SoC management, thermal derates, and fault scenarios
Implement automated regression test suites with pass/fail metrics, waveform capture, and auto-reports; integrate with Git and CI workflows
Analyze logs, isolate root causes across controller ↔ PLC ↔ plant model, file issues, verify fixes, and maintain full traceability
✅ Required Skills & Qualifications Required:
B.S./M.S. in Electrical, Controls, Power, Mechatronics Engineering or related field
3-7+ years in embedded/controls test & validation with HIL experience
Strong MATLAB/Simulink skills including Simulink Test and Simulink Real-Time
Hands‑on Speedgoat experience at ~1 ms base rates (fixed‑step solvers, rate transitions, task partitioning)
PLC integration experience; Schneider M580 familiarity preferred
Protocols: Modbus/TCP and DNP3 (command/telemetry, time‑stamped events, buffers)
Version control with Git; comfort with code reviews and branching strategies
Preferred:
PE certification
Simscape Electrical modeling experience
Python and VBA scripting skills
Experience with utility‑scale solar, BESS, or power plant operations
