Role Overview Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Assistant Director of Finance helps manage all financial, accounting, payroll, and compliance functions of the organization. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, organized, and comfortable working both independently and in a fast‑paced, highly collaborative setting.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in managing day‑to‑day financial operations and overall financial health
Prepare internal and external financial reports
Strengthen internal controls and develop financial policies and best practices
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and IRS regulations; prepare required filings
Support leadership in financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting
Manage relationships with external vendors, auditors, and software partners
Oversee daily accounting tasks (AP/AR, deposits, online donations, donor‑restricted funds)
Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts and general ledger activity
Manage bi‑weekly payroll and coordinate new employee onboardingProvide fiscal support to student organizations
Assist in the annual budgeting process within Sage software
Participate in year‑end close and the annual audit
Maintain accurate endowment accounting and quarterly investment activity
Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Finance
Qualifications (Shortened)
8+ years of finance or accounting experience (nonprofit preferred)
Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
Experience with budgeting, audits, and internal controls
Proficiency in Excel; experience with cloud‑based ERP systems (Sage Intacct, Bill, Blackbaud a plus)
Strong communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or CPA/CMA/CFA preferred
