Early Career Structural Engineer

Overview WSP is seeking an Early Career Structural Engineer to join our Power & Energy team in Houston, TX. We also consider candidates for Boise, ID, Atlanta, GA, Hailey, ID, Mount Laurel, NJ, Oradell, NJ, and Seattle, WA. The role focuses on designing foundations, structures, and piping for diverse power plant technologies, including solar, battery storage, and utility facilities.
Responsibilities
Assist in designing light foundations and structures for solar farms, battery energy storage facilities, and substation projects
Assist in designing heavy foundations and structures for large power generation projects such as generators, turbines, transformers, pipe racks, gas compressors, metal building systems, and masonry walls
Assist in designing structural steel systems for buildings, platforms, equipment supports, etc.
Coordinate design requirements with drafter and designers
Assist in preparing piping layout drawings, isometric sketches, and routing plans using CAD tools and/or MicroStation under supervision
Support development of preliminary piping designs and system concepts based on design criteria, site constraints, and equipment requirements
Conduct basic calculations for pipe sizing, flow rates, and pressure drops using established engineering formulas and tools
Participate in reviewing vendor catalogs and design specifications to select fittings, supports, valves, and piping materials
Assist in the preparation of bill of materials (BOM), quantity take‑offs, and technical notes
Support field verification tasks including gathering measurements, redlining drawings, and documenting existing site conditions
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to incorporate piping design into larger project frameworks including structural, civil, and mechanical inputs
Help maintain project documentation and revision control according to internal standards and client requirements
Participate in safety reviews, quality checks, and design reviews to build an understanding of engineering processes
Attend project meetings and technical training sessions to gain exposure to project workflows and regulatory considerations
Ensure compliance with applicable codes, company standards, and safety guidelines during design development
Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Structural, Civil, or closely related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience)
0–1 year of post‑education experience in piping, mechanical, or infrastructure engineering
Basic knowledge of fluid flow principles, material properties, and pipe support design
Familiarity with technical drawings, piping symbols, and schematic representations
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word for basic calculations and documentation
Strong self‑leadership, attention to detail, and ability to multi‑task in a dynamic work environment
Willingness to learn piping codes and standards such as ASME B31.3, B31.1, or API guidelines
Ability to follow engineering instructions, work under supervision, and contribute to collaborative team environments
Capability to interpret site plans and coordinate drawing content with other engineering disciplines
Understanding of basic workplace safety principles and field procedures
Willingness to participate in field visits and construction support when needed (5–10% travel)
Capacity to learn and apply new engineering software and modeling tools
Flexibility to support multiple tasks while maintaining deadlines
Strong work ethic, reliability, and desire to grow within the engineering profession
Excellent research and analytical skills
Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet business objectives
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, and spreadsheets
Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree preferred
Engineer‑in‑Training certification
Internship or co‑op experience in piping design, construction support, or mechanical layout
Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Plant 3D, or MicroStation
Familiarity with material specifications, industry terminology, or facility piping systems
Knowledge or willingness to learn structural modeling/analysis software (RISA, STAAD)
Exposure to geotechnical engineering, pre‑engineered metal building systems, or seismic analysis and design
