WSP is currently initiating a search for a Structural Engineer to join our Power & Energy team in Houston, TX. The following locations will also be considered: Boise, ID; Atlanta, GA; Hailey, ID; Mount Laurel, NJ; Oradell, NJ; and Seattle, WA.

Your Impact

Develop piping system layouts and routing plans using 2D/3D CAD software and coordinate integration with plant and facility design.

Design light foundations and structures for solar farms, battery energy storage facilities, and substation projects.

Design heavy foundations and structures for large power generation projects: generators, turbines, transformers, pipe racks, gas compressors, metal building systems, and masonry walls/buildings.

Design structural steel systems for buildings, platforms, equipment supports, etc.

Coordinate design requirements with drafter/designers.

Review and interpret P&IDs, equipment layouts, and utility drawings to generate line routing, supports, and general arrangement plans.

Perform engineering calculations related to pipe sizing, pressure drops, thermal expansion, and support loads.

Support stress analysis efforts and assist with interpretation of stress modeling results to inform routing and support requirements.

Select piping components and materials based on fluid service, pressure class, temperature, and corrosion considerations.

Prepare technical deliverables such as line lists, MTOs, valve data sheets, and piping specifications.

Lead the preparation of isometric drawings, bill of materials, and fabrication packages in collaboration with designers and drafters.

Coordinate with mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, and process disciplines to ensure design compatibility and resolve interface issues.

Conduct field verifications and site walkdowns to validate design assumptions and capture as‑built conditions.

Participate in design reviews, model reviews, and constructability assessments with internal teams and clients.

Review vendor documentation for pipe fittings, supports, specialty items, and equipment connections for design alignment.

Track progress and contribute to schedule compliance for assigned tasks within project timelines.

Provide technical support during construction including RFI responses, submittal reviews, and redline incorporation.

Assist in mentoring junior engineers and reviewing their deliverables for technical accuracy and consistency.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

3 to 5 years of relevant post‑education experience in piping engineering or industrial facility design.

Engineer in Training Certification.

Strong understanding of piping design principles, component selection, and layout requirements.

Experience using CAD software and MicroStation (e.g., AutoCAD, Plant 3D, or SmartPlant) for piping and general arrangement development.

Familiarity with applicable piping codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.1, B31.3, API, ANSI, ASTM).

Ability to evaluate material compatibility and corrosion resistance based on service conditions.

Experience interpreting and developing P&IDs, line lists, and piping specifications.

Working knowledge of thermal expansion, pipe stress, and flexibility considerations in layout design.

Experience working on multidisciplinary teams and contributing to integrated plant or facility designs.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for design documentation, calculations, and material takeoffs.

Strong communication skills for coordination with clients, vendors, and project stakeholders.

Understanding of constructability principles and ability to contribute to field and construction‑phase engineering support.

Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and meet deadlines in a collaborative environment.

Experience supporting QA/QC reviews of piping documentation and assisting with design verification.

Effective self‑leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.

Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.

Occasionally travel to clients and projects and sites to interface with clients, verify existing conditions, and monitor construction progress (5%–10% travel).

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree preferred.

Professional Engineer (PE) license or licensure in progress.

Familiarity with piping support standards, anchor/flexibility points, and seismic/wind loading considerations.

Experience supporting project proposals, design estimates, or preliminary engineering packages.

Experience with large‑scale plant design, energy systems, or industrial utility distribution.

Knowledge and/or ability to learn structural modeling/analysis software (RISA, STAAD).

Familiarity with power generation, transmission, and distribution projects.

Basic knowledge of building codes and material properties/specifications.

Exposure to geotechnical engineering.

Exposure to pre‑engineered metal building systems.

Exposure to seismic analysis and design.

Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $75,600 – $106,200.
