Summary
The Histotechnologist 3 (H) prepares tissues from surgical specimens for histology, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. The incumbent utilizes laboratory and hospital systems to accession data and perform other appropriate system functions.
Core Job Functions
Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examinations and handles complex immunohistochemistry jobs for clinical patient diagnosis.
Maintains and reviews quality control in assigned laboratory facilities.
Determines the acceptability of testing results and instrument function.
Maintains equipment and places orders for reagents and materials.
Maintains records of samples including accessioning, paraffin block and slide files, following specimen handling procedures.
Participates in formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
Provides guidance and leadership to employees within assigned section; makes recommendations for improvement of laboratory functions.
Handles clinical and patient concerns confidentially with integrity and discretion.
Identifies and resolves problems with equipment and specimen integrity; examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements; adheres to University and unit‑level policies and safeguards assets.
Qualifications
Education:
Associate’s degree in relevant field.
Certification and Licensing:
Current Florida Medical Technologist License; Histotechnologist.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
Accurate completion of assignments with attention to detail.
Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Ability to work independently and/or collaboratively.
Department Addendum – Specimen Receiving & Processing
Verify patient name on specimen container matches documentation.
Assign and record surgical numbers accurately.
Place specimens in properly labeled cassettes according to established procedures.
Change processing solutions daily per laboratory manual.
Monitor and document processing times; ensure correct tissue schedules followed.
Verify and record paraffin temperature settings to maintain optimal performance.
