Job Summary We are seeking an experienced HR Director to lead the full scope of human resources for our growing retail automotive dealership group. This role will be responsible for creating and executing HR strategy, ensuring compliance with employment laws, managing recruitment and onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations (including investigations), performance management, and fostering a culture aligned with the company’s values and business objectives.
This position is critical to the organization's overall success and will require significant hands‑on execution.
Key Responsibilities Strategic HR Leadership & Operations
Develop and implement HR strategies and programs that align with the overall business goals of the company and support long‑term growth.
Execute all day‑to‑day HR operations (talent acquisition, onboarding, benefits, compliance, employee relations, performance management, training and development, etc).
Manage HR policies and procedures, keeping them current and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations across all jurisdictions where dealerships operate.
Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership and department heads on HR‑related matters (staffing, organizational structure, workforce planning, employee relations).
Talent Acquisition & Onboarding
Lead recruitment efforts for all levels — from dealership staff to corporate and management positions; develop sourcing, interviewing, offer and onboarding processes.
Work with department heads to craft job descriptions, define required competencies, and maintain staffing plans to meet business needs.
Oversee onboarding, orientation, and offboarding processes, ensuring consistent, compliant and professional handling across all locations.
Administer and oversee employee benefits programs (health, retirement/401(k), leave policies, etc.), working with external vendors and carriers where needed.
Develop and manage compensation strategies, ensuring pay structures are competitive and aligned with market standards across all states of operation.
Employee Relations, Compliance & Investigations
Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues: complaints, grievances, conflict resolution, disciplinary processes, termination and exit interviews.
Conduct investigations into employee misconduct or complaints, maintain confidentiality, and work with senior leadership or legal counsel when needed.
Ensure full compliance with all relevant labor laws, regulations, and HR best practices across multiple states; update policies in response to changing regulations.
Performance Management & Organizational Development
Design and implement performance management systems to drive accountability, development, and growth across the company.
Develop and administer training and development programs, career growth and succession planning initiatives to support employee development and retention.
Support organizational change, restructuring, growth, or acquisition‑related HR integration (given this is a multi‑state, multi‑dealership environment).
Maintain accurate and secure personnel records, manage and/or implement HR software tools, and ensure documentation is compliant and up to date.
Prepare reports for senior management on HR metrics, workforce trends, and strategic HR initiatives, as requested.
Qualifications & Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field. (Master’s or advanced HR certification preferred.)
Significant HR experience (e.g. 10+ years)
Deep knowledge of employment laws and regulations (federal, state, and multi‑state compliance requirements).
Demonstrated experience with multi‑state operations, ideally with decentralized worksites or multiple business units.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to build trust, foster culture, and mediate conflict.
Excellent communication (verbal and written), decision‑making, discretion, confidentiality, and organizational skills.
Familiarity with payroll/benefits systems, and data analytics related to HR metrics and workforce planning.
Ability to work as a strategic business partner to senior leadership, translate business goals into HR initiatives, and align HR practices with business strategy.
Previous automotive retail HR experience is highly preferrable (especially in California).
Reporting & Relationships
Reports to: CEO and other senior executive (e.g. COO or CFO)
Direct reports: None
Collaborates closely with dealership general managers and executive leadership
Hybrid of corporate (company headquarters) + decentralized dealership network; requires flexibility, travel, and strong remote oversight. Work from home is not an option for this position.
Salary & Benefits
Compensation will be highly competitive and commensurate with experience.
