Director of Engineering, R&D Location: Memphis, TN. The AMES Companies, Inc. invites applicants to join a global industry leader recognized for innovation in automation and product development. The incumbent will lead cross‑functional engineering teams, drive the design and launch of advanced technologies—from electronic controls to motors and materials—and ensure products meet the highest standards for quality, cost‑effectiveness, and timely delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Provide technical leadership for Residential and Commercial businesses, and guide product strategy through design and development.

Direct all budget and capital activities for R&D product development.

Ensure technical direction of staff from concept to launch, fostering world‑class innovation with best practices.

Deliver a seamless transition of viable technologies into the product development process, managing risks while meeting quality, schedule, and cost goals.

Conduct regular technology reviews for executives and management.

Analyze and maintain product safety, quality, reliability, and compliance with agency standards.

Collaborate with technical and managerial leaders across the company to leverage resources and share best practices.

Integrate new technologies into the product development process to satisfy current and future market needs.

Manage and develop a team of technical engineers, building bench strength within the organization.

Lead global manufacturing initiatives, collaborating with international partners and suppliers to optimize production and maintain quality worldwide.

Guide and mentor technical electronic teams, promoting innovation in electronic controls and hardware/software integration.

Education & Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering (BSME, BSEE) or related technical degree; advanced degree preferred.

10+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years as an Engineering Manager focused on new product development.

Solid interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Proven ability to influence and persuade business leadership and drive consensus.

Demonstrated success in managing and delivering technically complex products.

Solid understanding of business fundamentals.

Experience in the air movement and circulation industry (required).

Global manufacturing and leading international engineering teams.

Special Qualifications or Skills

Entrepreneurial vision for future products.

Motor and controls experience.

Experience leading mobile app development for product control/monitoring.

Skill in integrating software with hardware for advanced device functionality.

Extrusion, die casting, plastics, sheet metal knowledge.

Design for manufacturing expertise.

Use of simulations in design.

Supplier interaction and visit experience.

Six Sigma tools from customer to end‑of‑life.

Exceptional attention to detail and problem‑solving and organizational skills.
