Position Overview
A
Civil Engineer VI
performs responsible professional engineering work in supervising a large engineering section or assists in directing the activities of a major engineering division or bureau; supervises the preparation of designs, plans, specifications, estimates and reports; and performs other duties as required.
Current Vacancies
A vacancy with the Department of Design and Construction, Civil Division. This position is in the Construction Management Branch and is responsible for supervising the performance of construction work for various Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects assigned to Field Construction Section A. The Civil Engineer VI assists the Branch Chief in coordinating and overseeing the various facets of construction activities and compliance for construction projects involving infrastructure projects including improvement districts, roadways, sidewalks, drainage, flood control, earth movement, rock falls, bridge and other structures, and ADA compliance in accordance with contract documents and established policies, procedures, and standards.

Two vacancies in the Wastewater Engineering and Construction Division, in multiple branches.
One vacancy in the Collection System Engineering Branch, responsible for a Collection System Engineering Section and the engineering, design, and administrative work connected with the planning, directing, developing, and reviewing of plans, specifications, cost estimates, engineering studies, and support during construction on all of the City’s initiated gravity sewer improvements and appurtenances.
One vacancy in the Plant Engineering Branch, responsible for a Plant Engineering Section and the engineering, design, and administrative work connected with the planning, directing, developing and reviewing of plans, specifications, cost estimates, engineering studies and support during construction on all of the City’s initiated wastewater facilities projects.
One vacancy in the Refuse Collection and Disposal Division. This position directs and coordinates all administrative, technical, financial, and operational activities of the Disposal Branch.
Special Work Requirements Occasional exposure to construction and traffic hazards, sewage gases, sewer treatment chemicals, paint fumes, noise, electrical hazards, and moving equipment. Some physical dexterity is required to occasionally perform field investigations, which include climbing ladders, descending into trenches, tanks, and manholes, crawling through pipes, carrying sampling, measuring, and testing equipment, and walking on uneven or obstructed surfaces. Regular hours are anticipated but may require shift, evening, night, weekend, or holiday work to accommodate unusual problems or workload. Will serve as Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.

Education Requirement Equivalent to graduation from a regionally‑accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in an engineering specialty.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally‑accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Experience Requirement Three years of registered professional Civil Engineering experience, including or supplemented by one year in supervising or being responsible for an engineering operation or function.
License Requirement
Current State of Hawaii registration as a professional engineer in Civil Engineering. Applicants with a current out‑of‑state license in Civil Engineering must obtain their Hawaii license prior to appointment.
Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license (Type 3/automobile), as required.
