Overview The Department of Psychology in the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) invites applications for the Director of Operations. The department serves a student body of over 1,700 undergraduate students and over 130 graduate students, with almost 50 faculty members from varying backgrounds. This role involves leadership of the department’s complex state and federal grant portfolio, ensuring fiscal compliance and strategic budgeting.

Responsibilities

Serve on the Departmental Leadership Team to advise and support strategic department planning.

Provide leadership for management and coordination of the department’s complex state, research, student fee, and foundation accounts, including oversight of a $10–12M+ federal grant portfolio.

Ensure fiscal team compliance with Commonwealth and university policies and grant requirements.

Oversee daily fiscal planning and operations, including budgeting, forecasting, procurement, and record‑keeping.

Coordinate with principal investigators to support faculty research and professional development.

Lead post‑award grant responsibilities (award verification, NCEs, re‑budgeting, closeout paperwork, etc.).

Coordinate with HR, central fiscal, and grants administration teams across the college.

Serve as Point of Contact for audits and primary effort coordination.

Assist in resolving grant accounting issues and communicate with external stakeholders as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 5–7 years of relevant research and/or fiscal/business experience, or equivalent combination.

Supervision and leadership experience in administration, with support of team members’ skill building.

Experience with post‑award management of sponsored research across federal, state, local, and internal funding streams.

Extensive budgetary development experience with emphasis on financial analytics and complex budgets.

Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a department strategic plan that integrates fiscal operations and data analysis.

Strong problem‑solving skills, sound judgment, and creative solutions.

Experience fostering a respectful, professional, and civic environment for faculty, staff, and students.

Team‑based leadership style and ability to coordinate the Psychology Service Center.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree and seven years of progressive experience in research administration and leadership.

Experience with pre‑award management of sponsored research.

Experience using VCU financial and grant systems (Banner, Reporting Center, SAS Reporting, RealTime, DocuSign, VCU File Locker, RealSource, Chrome River, Collegiate Travel Planner, Google Suite, RamSpot, ECC).

Certified Research Administrator (CRA) by RACC.
