College Advisor – Malcolm X College (City Colleges of Chicago) Position Overview Malcolm X College is seeking a College Advisor for the Advising and Transition Department. The mission is to provide accessible liberal arts and health‑focused education that fosters personal and professional achievement, with core values of accountability, community, diversity, empowerment, learning, and respect.

Primary Objective Reporting to the Associate Dean – Student Services, a College Advisor supports student success through quality academic advising, career exploration, and support of transfer and career planning. The role connects students with needed support services; builds relationships and proactively engages students throughout their enrollment at CCC.

Essential Duties

Advise potential and current students on establishing educational and career goals.

Provide in-depth information on degree/certificate program requirements, student services, career exploration, CCC transfer partnerships, and other areas related to student success and enrollment.

Interpret and explain CCC policies and procedures related to enrollment, financial aid, scholarships, special student populations, completion, transfer, and career paths.

Review placement scores and conduct unofficial transfer evaluations of transcripts for advising purposes.

Coach and guide students in identifying options and making informed decisions when selecting a degree or certificate program.

Assist students in creating educational plans that outline a clear path toward degree/program completion and desired transfer/career outcomes; recommend course selection and pathways to satisfy degree requirements.

Adapt advising relationships and strategies to suit student needs throughout the academic life cycle, working with first‑year, second‑year/completion, and transfer populations.

Meet one‑on‑one with students (virtual and/or in‑person) as required to discuss education plans, review progress, and support needs.

Respond to student inquiries via email, phone, virtual or in person.

Provide registration services for new and returning students remotely and/or in person; advise on course selection and resolve registration problems in coordination with other departments.

Monitor and track academic progress toward completion and transfer/career goals.

Collaborate with transfer, career, and other relevant departments to identify potential student needs and barriers; advise students and connect them to campus support services and external resources.

Support students at risk or receiving academic alerts to help regain good academic standing; assist with Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) holds and appeals.

Utilize systems such as CS9, Open Book, Navigate, and Transferology to track and record student progress.

Collaborate with college staff and faculty on initiatives to foster student development; promote student accountability and provide advocacy.

Develop and implement student‑centered workshops and events; participate in preparing and presenting new student orientations.

Participate in professional development opportunities and campus or district committees associated with specific student populations.

Maintain confidentiality of information disclosed as part of the advising relationship.

Position Schedule Monday – Wednesday: 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM Thursday: 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM Friday: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree preferred.

Three years of student services/affairs experience in a higher education environment, with at least one year advising traditional and non‑traditional college‑level students.

Knowledge of coaching students, empowering them with knowledge, opportunities, and agency for personal, academic, and career development.

Knowledge of proactive and intrusive advising practices.

Experience working with a culturally diverse student body.

Familiarity with student success initiatives desirable.

Knowledge of academic and occupational programs, transfer guides, assessment, and academic career advisement.

Knowledge of student development theories, including persistence and retention.

Familiarity with student success management systems such as EAB’s Navigate.

Knowledge of post‑secondary academic planning, policies, and services.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Strong organizational, time‑management, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to provide exemplary customer service.

Self‑directed, able to work independently within changing deadlines.

Ability to work within a culturally diverse work environment.

Availability to work some evenings and weekends.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and technology tools for virtual engagement (e.g., Zoom, Teams).

Salary Range $69,545 – $76,500 (determined by the collective bargaining agreement)
