Overview
The Department of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB) invites qualified persons to apply for a tenure-track assistant professor position to join our faculty beginning September 1, 2026. Candidates should have demonstrated research and teaching strengths in the sociology of gender/sexualities with a preference for candidates who can teach Queer Theory/Methods. Candidates who are able to teach a first-year course for sociology majors requiring qualitative methods preferred. Candidates should have an emerging/established research program with the potential to generate external funding, a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring, the capacity to expand diversity initiatives on campus, and enhance the university’s commitment to public service.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses across the Sociology and Criminology & Criminal Justice programs.
Conduct research in the sociology of gender/sexualities, seeking external funding opportunities.
Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Expand the university’s diversity initiatives and public service engagement.
Qualifications
Terminal degree (Ph.D.) in Sociology or a closely related discipline, completed no later than August 31, 2026.
Demonstrated research and teaching strengths in gender/sexualities or Queer Theory.
Experience or potential to teach a first-year course requiring qualitative methods.
Track record or potential for external funding acquisition.
Teaching Load The normal teaching load for tenure-track faculty at UMB is 2‑2 over the academic year.
Collaborative Opportunities Collaborate with Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies department, the Gender, Leadership, and Public Policy Certificate program, the Consortium on Gender, Security and Human Rights, and the Center for Women in Politics & Public Policy.
