Position Summary The Engineering Manager leads the site engineering team, driving strategic initiatives, managing projects, and fostering continuous improvement across manufacturing operations. The role ensures successful execution of engineering activities that support business growth, product continuity, and operational excellence. The manager collaborates closely with the design center to support new product commercialization, line extensions, and capacity expansion initiatives, and contributes to the site Leadership Team.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
Evaluate manufacturing processes through research and statistical analysis.
Improve manufacturing efficiency by optimizing workflow, space utilization, and equipment layout using BD Excellence principles.
Lead cross‑functional teams on R&D and sustaining engineering projects.
Drive process improvements, change control, and validation activities (TMVs, IQ/OQ/PQ).
Direct preventive maintenance and troubleshoot operations and facility equipment.
Apply engineering knowledge to enhance product design, fabrication, tooling, and materials.
Specify manufacturing processes, methods, tools, equipment, and controls.
Prepare and manage operating budgets and schedules.
Coordinate engineering efforts with other departments at the Carol Stream site.
Implement and uphold corporate safety standards and facility procedures.
Follow Quality System Regulations and established procedures.
Promote and model behavior consistent with the BD Way including values, leadership commitments and growth mindset.
Responsible for attainment of plant and departmental goals in support of overall plant objectives.
Identify development needs and potential of employees and provide or recommend project assignments and training to increase expertise.
Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable CAD programs.
Knowledge of computer logic or programming.
Strong interpersonal skills: verbal & written communication, presentation, consensus building, customer focus, professionalism, coaching, influencing, and team building.
Managerial skills, including technical writing, budgeting, and office software.
Ability to interpret regulations, corporate, business unit, facility, and department procedures.
Ability to participate in and provide leadership on teams and maintain a positive work environment.
Understand team functions, leadership techniques, and project management methodologies.
Education and Experience
Engineering degree from an accredited university (required).
3 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably FDA‑regulated.
5 years of experience in training and employee development.
Solid foundation in Lean/Six Sigma methodologies.
Knowledge of statistical methods including control charts, process capability, and design of experiments.
Ability to troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, and automated systems.
Machining experience using mills, lathes, and CNC machines.
Project management experience.
Physical Demands The employee regularly stands, walks, sits, uses sight, and manipulates objects, tools, and equipment. Verbal communication with associates is frequent. The role may require reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching and lifting up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
Work Environment
Work may occur in an office setting, on the manufacturing floor in a controlled radiation area, or in the machine shop.
