Position Overview
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Technician within the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Rutgers Cancer Institute. Position is Full Time, 40‑hour week.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Lab Technician performs and assists with technical laboratory procedures and analyses in support of specialized research activities of the laboratory, including flow cytometry, chemiluminescence analysis, and single‑molecule analysis of replicated DNA. The individual also assists in the set‑up and conducting of experiments as required. Additionally, this position performs other related laboratory duties as required.
Responsibilities
Assist in packing, unpacking, storing, and classification of lab supplies and specimens.
Perform standard laboratory procedures involved in making required tests and analyses.
Assist in preparing culture media, reagents, stains, and stock solutions.
Assist with experimentation and research activities, including working with mice.
Assist with the maintenance of the Laboratory facilities, equipment, and instruments.
Maintain accurate records of experimentation and research.
Review selected literature relevant to research activities.
Prepare reports, documents, and databases.
Help maintain records, files, and databases.
Understand and adhere to Rutgers' compliance standards as they appear in RBHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy; understand, demonstrate, and model the Rutgers Cancer Institute core values.
Keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state, and Rutgers compliance standards.
Act as a role model for corporate integrity, customer service and improved quality.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Associate's Degree in a relevant science.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Maintain accurate records, follow laboratory safety guidelines and institutional policies.
Successfully complete mandatory lab safety/shipping training courses required by Rutgers Cancer Institute.
Effective oral and communication skills.
Computer literate with proficiency in database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Occasional overtime flexibility is required.
Preferred Qualifications
B.S. or B.A. in Biological Science degree is preferred.
Experience in cancer survivorship research preferred.
Prior laboratory experience in assisting and/or performing experiments including animal handling and molecular biology is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain general laboratory functions is desired.
Physical Demands and Work Environment PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing.
No special vision requirements.
Lifting up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Laboratory work environment, with moderate noise.
Exposure to biological specimens (cells, blood, tissues etc.) with possible exposure to infectious diseases, exposure to hazardous chemicals including therapeutic drugs.
Laboratory environment operates under mandatory universal safety precaution.
