The Associate Director, Construction and Project Safety is part of the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Department and reports to the Director of Occupational Safety. The role develops, implements, oversees, and enforces safety processes specific to construction and renovation projects through design, construction, commissioning, and turnover. The incumbent serves as the primary point of contact for EHS on planning and renovation projects and attends planning meetings to ensure health and safety concerns are addressed. This position covers all BU properties and Boston Medical Center properties adjacent to the BU Medical Campus.
Job Responsibilities
Collaborate with BU space, design, and project managers and related staff to ensure safety requirements are included in the design and planning stages.
Develop and maintain comprehensive construction safety programs, plans, policies, and procedures including pre‑construction risk assessments, NFPA 241 compliance, infection control risk assessments, hot work permitting, safety occupancy checklists, site inspections, accident and construction incident reports, contractor safety training requirements and corrective action plans.
Provide sign‑off on design for all regulatory components and perform routine site visits to ensure compliance.
Interact directly with contractors or their safety officers to ensure BU campus safety processes, standards, and reporting requirements are followed, documented, and that corrective action plans are implemented.
Review construction inspection findings to identify trends, track areas of concern, and develop associated corrective action plans.
Qualifications
At least 5 years of related experience, preferably in a higher education environment.
Experience with construction safety processes, NFPA standards, and regulatory compliance.
Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across research, academic, healthcare, and service departments.
