Boston University Information Services & Technology (IS&T) seeks a Systems Administrator II to support a broad range of server and operating system administration functions. This role will collaborate with multiple technology groups across campus to administer and improve the underlying server technology that enables a wide variety of university client services. The position is located in Boston, MA with hybrid/remote options, and includes rotating 24/7 on‑call support with night and weekend coverage for critical business cycles. The incumbent reports to the Assistant Director of Systems Administration & Basis.
Responsibilities
Manage and maintain server operating systems, hypervisors, processes, hardware and related software.
Work with cross‑functional teams to install, test, transition server operating systems, hypervisors, processes, and related hardware & software into production status.
Maintain systems and evaluate/apply upgrades.
Coordinate with vendors on problem resolution.
Detect, diagnose, isolate, and correct system faults.
Serve as Level‑2 technical support for the Help Desk; support incident and problem management activities.
Provide off‑hours on‑call support and assistance during incidents.
Support the maintenance and periodic testing of business continuity and disaster recovery procedures.
Investigate and recommend new technology and techniques to enhance the performance, reliability, and availability of IT resources and services.
Required Skills & Qualifications
3+ years of experience administering Windows systems in a physical and/or virtualized environment.
Bachelor's degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience.
Technical expertise diagnosing Windows operating system and associated software issues.
Ability to troubleshoot software, hardware and network issues.
Comfortable installing, configuring and upgrading Windows applications and specialized third‑party applications.
Knowledge of TCP/IP LAN/wireless networking principles and application protocols (HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, FTP).
Experience with tools commonly used in a complex enterprise environment (remote assistance, asset management, imaging and deployment, patching, backup and restore, endpoint protection).
Ability to lift moderately heavy equipment (up to 50 pounds).
Experience with VMware, Active Directory, group policy, and server administration skills including monitoring performance and file permissions.
Bonus qualifications: willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
