The Role We're hiring a hands on Manager, Software Engineering to lead a cross-functional team building a care coordination and case management platform. You'll guide a Ruby on Rails and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) team focused on delivering secure, scalable features, improving engineering velocity and quality, and collaborating closely with Product and Customer teams to support care managers and provider networks.
Responsibilities
Hands on software engineering 75%, leadership 25%.
Lead roadmap execution, release quality, and service reliability for a Rails/GCP application.
Manage hiring, onboarding, coaching, and career development.
Shape technical direction with senior engineers, including API design, data modeling, and observability.
Improve engineering practices: CI/CD, test automation, trunk-based development, code reviews, and incident response.
Partner with Product on discovery, prioritization, and milestone planning.
Collaborate with Customer Support on operational readiness and post-incident learning.
Ensure privacy and data protection in healthcare contexts.
Foster an inclusive, high-performing engineering culture.
Required Skills
~8+ years of professional software development experience, including ~2+ years of people management and ~3+ years of technical/project leadership.
Production experience with Ruby on Rails (monolith or modular services), including performance tuning, background jobs, and API development.
Public cloud experience. Ideally Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience operating customer-facing apps (e.g., GKE/Cloud Run, Cloud SQL/PostgreSQL, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Cloud Monitoring/Logging) but open to AWS or Azure.
Bonus Points For
System design & architecture best practices including CI/CD and DevOps practices; observability (metrics, logs, traces); database fundamentals (PostgreSQL); caching/queueing (Redis/Sidekiq); infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform); as well as secure SDLC best practices.
Agile delivery leadership and experience running scrums.
Demonstrated success leading product engineering teams shipping iterative value in partnership with Product Management and Design.
Strong communication, prioritization, and stakeholder management skills.
Healthcare, care-coordination, or adjacent domain experience is a plus.
