Sr. Director of Operations - Design/Build Electrical, Commercial & Data Centers - Ohio
The Senior Director of Operations will provide strategic and operational leadership for the company's electrical design/build division in the Ohio market, with a strong focus on large-scale Commercial and Mission‑Critical Data Center projects. This executive role is responsible for the overall performance, profitability, safety, quality, and growth of all design, preconstruction, construction, and post‑construction operational activities. The Director will drive process optimization, financial stewardship, and cultivate a high‑performance culture across project management, estimating, and field operations teams.
Responsibilities
Develop and execute the operational strategy for the Ohio market, aligning with the company's national goals, particularly for the electrical design/build of data centers and large commercial facilities.
Assume ownership of the division’s Profit and Loss (P&L), including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Implement cost‑effective strategies to maximize profitability and operational efficiency.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives using principles like Lean Construction and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) to optimize workflows from design handoff through commissioning.
Lead the adoption and integration of advanced construction technologies (e.g., BIM, project management software like Procore, and digital tools) to enhance project delivery.
Oversee all phases of complex electrical design/build projects, ensuring high‑quality, on‑time, and on‑budget delivery. This includes specialized systems like UPS, generators, switchgear, power distribution, and advanced cooling systems for data centers.
Identify, assess, and mitigate operational and contractual risks across all projects. Ensure strict adherence to project specifications, contracts, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) programs.
Champion a Zero‑Incident safety culture. Ensure all operations comply with local, state, federal, and industry standards, including NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and mission‑critical facility regulations.
Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing team of Project Managers, Estimators, Field Superintendents, and support staff. Foster a collaborative, accountable, and inclusive work environment.
Strategically plan and allocate labor, equipment, and material resources across all active projects to meet demanding schedules and maximize utilization.
Collaborate with Human Resources to implement effective staffing, training, and professional development programs to scale the operational team for anticipated growth.
Maintain and build strong, trusted relationships with key clients, particularly owners and general contractors in the Data Center and large Commercial sectors throughout Ohio.
Direct the preconstruction, estimating, and bidding processes to ensure competitive, accurate, and profitable proposals for design/build electrical scopes.
Negotiate and manage relationships with key subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to ensure material availability and favorable terms.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field.
Minimum of 15+ years of progressive experience in the electrical construction industry, with a focus on design/build projects, including a minimum of 7+ years in a senior leadership/Director‑level Operations role.
Deep technical and operational expertise in the construction of Mission‑Critical Data Centers and large‑scale Commercial facilities (e.g., industrial, manufacturing, healthcare).
Proven experience managing a large‑scale division's P&L (e.g., $40M - $100M+).
Exceptional leadership, communication, strategic planning, and negotiation skills.
Professional Engineer (PE) license, PMP, or DBIA certification.
Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Construction Management.
Established relationships and knowledge of the Ohio construction market, including local codes, subcontractors, and key clients.
