Title and Overview American Humane Society (AHS) is seeking a Manager, Business Development to develop alliances and collaborations that expand AHS’s third‑party animal welfare audit programs (Farms, Zoos & Aquariums, Ecotourism, and Companion Animals). The position is hybrid, based at the DC office or remote, and reports directly to the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships.

Overview For nearly 150 years, AHS has led the way in protecting animals and strengthening the bonds between animals and people. This role helps drive growth and industry engagement for AHS’s certification and audit programs.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with Communications, Marketing and Development teams to develop and implement strategic outreach plans that grow certification programs.

Work with Program Director(s) and the VP of Strategic Partnerships to set and meet ambitious growth goals for program expansion.

Create opportunities for national and international spokespersons to represent the program, reflecting AHS’s mission and values.

Differentiates AHS and its certification program from other animal welfare organizations and certification programs.

Identify and attend annual trade shows, conferences, and industry meetings to maximize opportunities to meet influential stakeholders.

Ensure that all program and informational materials, trade‑show graphics and displays, and websites are up to date and reflect program standards.

Deliver effective and timely solutions and collaborate with team members to implement annual program goals.

Essential Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

7+ years of proven, successful business development/sales experience; bachelor’s degree required.

Diverse marketing and sales experience across animal health and welfare, agriculture, restaurant/food supply chain, retail, or hospitality.

Growth mindset with hunger and drive to exceed goals.

Product certification process knowledge preferred.

Strong verbal and written communication skills and active listening.

Diplomacy and relationship‑building with diverse constituencies.

Negotiation and contract experience preferred.

Client‑service attitude, quick learning, and positive demeanor.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Remote work possible with preference for location near an airport.

Extensive travel, including international travel, nights, weekends, and rural locations.

Valid passport and driver’s license required.

Exposure to barns, intensive animal production, biosecure environments, protective gear may be required.

Occasional lifting of boxes >25 lbs.

Regular sitting, screen use, and communication via computer/phone/hands‑on interactions.

Location: Washington, DC (remote option)

Compensation: $110,000–$130,000
