Software Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Linux Kernel Canonical, a leading provider of open‑source software and operating systems, is looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead technical teams responsible for the delivery and ongoing support of all Linux kernels in the Ubuntu distribution.

About the role As a manager, you will grow a distributed team of active software engineers, challenge and develop high‑performing individuals, influence culture, and ensure timely delivery of kernel upgrades across >100 Ubuntu Linux kernels. The role requires strong technical leadership and a background in Linux kernel development.

Responsibilities

Lead a geographically distributed team of software engineers focused on the Ubuntu Linux kernel.

Own specific kernel capabilities: hardware support, cloud partner integration, quality control, security hardening, and automation of build and test processes.

Collaborate with other Canonical teams, the open‑source community, and commercial partners.

Qualifications

Significant programming experience in C (Python, Golang, or similar languages is a plus).

Experience with operating‑system kernel internals; Linux experience preferred but not required.

Track record of managing or leading a software engineering team.

Ability to coordinate cross‑functional teams to achieve shared goals.

Proficiency with version control (git) and experience packaging for Ubuntu/Debian/Snap.

Strong written and spoken English, excellent presentation skills.

Will travel internationally up to twice a year for company events (max two weeks).

Nice‑to‑have Skills

Experience in kernel patching, debugging, and device‑driver development.

Knowledge of BSPs and low‑level system engineering.

Background in CI/CD and process automation.

Public involvement in an open‑source project.
