Manager, Core Tax Services - Corporate/ASC 740
The Core Tax Services (“CTS”) Manager – ASC 740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating alternative actions to lessen tax burden and compliance cost, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations, and acting as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 tax issues. The role requires understanding potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks and changes in tax policy.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with BDO policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
Conduct top‑level reviews of T/R and resolve all tax issues with the client; involve specialists when appropriate.
Communicate with issues identified in tax accrual review with Assurance clients.
Plan and review tax processes and procedures, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process and time incurred, timely billing, and timely collection of accounts receivable.
Manage client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.
Provide timely advice to clients.
Research
Identify when research is needed and frame issues for research.
Provide research methodology for efficient research processes.
Train managers/staff on research skills and help frame ASC 740 tax issues for analysis.
Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 / FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Apply BDO policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) proactively.
Explain and discuss income‑tax‑provision components and uncertain tax positions to clients and other complexities of ASC 740.
Communicate with Assurance team to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
Review tax provisions and prepared workpapers.
Utilize and manage Specialized Tax Services (STS) as needed.
Tax Consulting
Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.
Consider applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
Develop and implement a work plan that incorporates STS assistance on ongoing projects.
Serve as a technical resource and ensure client service teams comply with Firm policy.
Provide assistance with exam support and frame projects for delegation to seniors and associates.
Tax Specialization
Develop in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in areas such as individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits.
Possibly organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in a specialization area.
Possibly train and mentor managers, seniors, and associates on ASC 740.
Strategy Development
Introduce and develop new ideas to improve client, Firm, or personnel positions by reducing taxes or expenses.
Make suggestions for improving past work products or approaches.
May lead marketing campaigns if applicable.
Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Collaborate with the Firm’s National Tax and Specialized Tax Services to deliver high‑quality deliverables.
Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise Associates and Senior Associates on all projects.
Review work prepared by Associates and Senior Associates and provide review comments.
Train Associates and Senior Associates on software tools.
Act as a career advisor to Associates and Senior Associates.
Schedule and manage workload of Associates and Senior Associates.
Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, required.
Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation.
Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred).
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Effective delegation skills.
Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills.
Teamwork ability.
Ability to manage a team of tax professionals.
Writing tax advice and client relationships.
Executive presence and ability to serve as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions.
Experience
Five (5) or more years of prior experience, required.
Experience managing the process of preparing and auditing ASC‑740 computations for privately held and publicly traded clients, required.
Supervisory experience, required.
Multinational client experience, preferred.
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or equivalent), required.
Software
Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat, required.
Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA; proficient in tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, GoSystemRS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs and standard tax workpapers, preferred.
