Job Summary The Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit (Senior Manager) is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income issues. This role is also responsible for recognizing, communicating potential risks and changes in tax policy, and making top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. In addition, the Senior Manager is a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team and actively participates in marketing and networking within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.

Job Duties

Tax Compliance

Ensures both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM)

Conducts review of T/R’s and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate

Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate

Reviews Forms 990, 990‑PF and 990‑T workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements

Plans and reviews the tax process and the procedures to be performed, including:

Budgeting and staffing

Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior

Timely billing, including management of identified out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client

Timely collection of A/R

Manages client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project

Provides advice to clients in a timely manner

Research

Identifies complex issues to be researched as needed; frames issues clearly and concisely and reports the analysis

Involves firm specialists as appropriate

Tax Consulting

Develops, recommends, and implements efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes

Applies the combination of tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions

Develops and implements a work plan to include/organize the Specialized Tax Services (STS) assistance on ongoing projects from client

Serves as a technical resource to peers within the region

Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance

Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA)

Strategy Development

Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing nonprofit tax benefits

Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action

Researches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideas

Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects, and offers input on how to improve processes and methods

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on all projects

Reviews work prepared by Nonprofit Tax team and provides review comments

Trains Nonprofit Tax team on how to use all current software tools

Acts as a career advisor to Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers

Schedules and manages workload of Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers

Provides verbal and written performance feedback to Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers

Trains Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on research skills and helps to appropriately frame nonprofit tax issues for analysis

Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to Nonprofit Tax Associates and Senior Associates

Other Duties as Required

Performs other tasks as needed to support the team and projects

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR Bachelor’s degree in any other focus area and a CPA certification, required

Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred

Experience

Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required

Supervisory experience, required

License / Certifications

CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required

Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred

Software

Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, required

Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred

Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills as well as decision‑making skills

Ability to work well in a team environment

Ability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals

Ability to compose written tax advice

Ability to effectively develop and maintain client relationships

Executive presence and the ability to act as the primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Illinois Range: $140,000 - $190,000 Minnesota Range: $130,000 - $190,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $150,000 - $200,000
