Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit
BDO USA is looking for a Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit to advise clients on tax implications, reduce tax burdens, and ensure compliance. The role serves as the primary point of contact for complex nonprofit tax matters and supports the regional Nonprofit Tax team.
Key Responsibilities
Advises clients on tax implications of business objectives and proposes strategies to lower tax burden and compliance costs.
Provides guidance on tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income matters.
Recognizes and communicates potential tax risks and changing policy, making high‑level filing and resolution decisions.
Acts as the main client contact for complex nonprofit tax questions and maintains client relationships.
Participates in marketing, networking, and business development within the nonprofit tax specialty.
Key Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensures client compliance with all authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens and ensuring internal teams follow BDO policies.
Reviews and resolves tax issues, including Forms 990, 990‑PF, 990‑T workpapers, and audited financial statement disclosures.
Plans and reviews the tax process, budgeting, staffing, engagement monitoring, billing, A/R collection, and client relationship management.
Research
Identifies complex issues for research, frames questions, and reports analysis to clients and firm specialists.
Tax Consulting
Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce future taxes.
Applies tax and business knowledge to propose solutions, implement work plans, and serve as a technical resource.
Manages federal and state agency inquiries and ensures compliance with Written Tax Advice (WTA) policy.
Strategy Development
Introduces new ideas to improve client, firm, and personnel positions, including experimental nonprofit tax strategies.
Reviews studies, offers alternative courses of action, and leverages lessons learned to enhance processes.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers across projects.
Reviews work, provides feedback, and trains teams on software tools, research skills, and delegation.
Acts as a career advisor and schedules workloads.
Education & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR Bachelor's in another field with a required CPA certification.
Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation (preferred).
Experience
Eight (8) or more years in nonprofit tax or relevant public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services.
Supervisory experience (required).
Licensing & Certifications
CPA certification, attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, or IRS Enrolled Agent (or equivalent).
Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role (preferred).
Software
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (required).
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software (preferred).
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Effective delegation, analytical, research, and critical‑thinking skills.
Team‑work, client‑relationship development, and executive presence.
Ability to compose written tax advice and act as primary client contact for presentations.
Salary Ranges
Illinois : $140,000 – $190,000
Minnesota : $130,000 – $190,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester : $150,000 – $200,000
