The Newbury Boston at One Newbury Street, located in the premier shopping and dining neighborhood of Boston’s Back Bay, is an iconic property originally opened in 1927 as one of the first Ritz‑Carlton hotels in the U.S. and most recently was the Taj Boston. The building was recently transformed into a 286‑room luxury hotel with 16,000‑sq‑ft of stunning event spaces, signature dining experiences and a reimagined front entrance on Newbury Street.

Overview

The Catering Sales Manager serves as a key ambassador of The Newbury Boston’s social and wedding experience. This role is responsible for cultivating, securing, and curating exceptional celebrations—from intimate milestones to grand, multi‑layered weddings—while upholding the hotel’s five‑star service ethos. The ideal candidate is a passionate wedding specialist who thrives in the world of high‑touch events, family connections, discerning planners, exquisite details, and elevated hospitality. They are relationship‑driven, creatively inspired, and adept at translating a couple’s vision into a flawlessly executed, meaningful experience that reflects the sophistication of The Newbury Boston.

Responsibilities

Sales:

Attend all required departmental meetings.

Develop a full working knowledge of hotel operations (Food and Beverage, Guest Services, Reservations).

Learn and enforce company and department sales policies and SOPs.

Meet or exceed set sales goals and operate within the established sales expense budget.

Cover Saturday and evening office hours as scheduled.

Initiate and follow up on leads; maintain an active sales solicitation program.

Monitor top‑account production and evaluate market trends.

Maintain regular contact with existing accounts per the Account Coverage Program.

Meet or exceed sales solicitation call goals assigned by the Director of Catering.

Invite clients to the hotel for entertainment, lunches, tours, and site inspections.

Assist with special promotions for direct sales segments.

Prepare required reports promptly.

Maximize occupancy and ADR through effective selling techniques.

Conduct professional, thorough site inspections to showcase hotel features.

Use the property’s sales management system for all transactions and reporting.

Greet onsite contacts and adhere to Prime Selling Time (PST).

Network through community and professional associations.

Review planner evaluations with the Director of Catering to ensure follow‑up.

Administrative:

Prepare Banquet Event Orders (BEOS) and event floor plans as needed.

Track all incoming leads and manage file turnover for definite bookings.

Contribute to daily catering and event reports: Daily Events Report, Change Log, BEO Run, Missing BEO Report.

Organize BEO book prior to daily BEO meetings.

Process purchase orders and coordinate with Accounting.

Handle pop‑up small meeting requests (MSE) as required.

Maintain and update the outside vendor database.

Qualifications

At least 3 years of progressive hotel sales experience in the Boston market.

Physical Requirements

Flexible and willing to work long or irregular hours.

Light lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently.

General Requirements

Effective verbal and written communication with all employee levels and guests.

Strong listening, problem‑identification, and solution‑implementation skills.

Excellent multitasking, prioritization, and deadline management.

Professional conduct: courteous, friendly, and service‑oriented at all interactions.

Attend all required hotel meetings and trainings.

Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Highgate Hotel Standards.

Adhere to personal appearance, grooming standards, and safety regulations.

Maintain confidentiality of information.

Perform additional duties as requested by management.
