The Opportunity CACI is looking for a Metrologist to join the team at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Decision’s (NSWCCDs) Fabrication Team. In this role, you will utilize high precision measurement equipment (coordinate measurement machines (CMMs), laser tracker equipment, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers) and perform computerized spatial analysis. Calibrate equipment then measure item geometry and spatial relationships. This includes small and large-scale items requiring dimension and tolerance analysis to determine accuracy. You will restrain items to prevent hog and sag deformation prior to measurement, provide Tolerance Measurement Study upon completion, perform preventative and routine maintenance and calibration of measurement equipment as needed, and issue calibration.
Responsibilities
Prepare measurement reports per customer specifications. Determine if first article parts are acceptable.
Implement new innovative practices to promote part accuracy and proficiency. This may include, but is not limited to, new reporting templates or formats that better facilitate the documentation, reporting, and tracking of precision measurement activities.
Use Polyworks Metrology Software to inspect high tolerance finished components designed with minimal fixturing to perform article inspection.
Use Polyworks to advise shop management, supervisors, and planners during the planning and costing phase on the difficulty, complexity, and potential issues which may arise during the inspection process.
Analyze and diagnose problems that may arise during the inspection process. Use Polyworks or Spatial Analyzer to determine root cause of potential issues and develop methods and processes to ensure that similar issues are reduced or eliminated in future tasks.
Use Polyworks software to perform Laser Tracker measurements according to the Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices.
Adhere to the Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices when applicable.
Design specialized tooling fixtures to support the production of complex machined components.
Apply knowledge of engineering disciplines in structural design, weld design, material applications, and prototype design.
Be skilled in interpreting complex engineered drawings, sketches, and verbal communications.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience with utilizing high precision measurement equipment (CMMs, laser tracker, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers) and performing computerized spatial analysis.
Knowledge of manufacturing trades including industrial and commercial manufacturing processes to contribute to the engineering design and development function.
Ability to collect and analyze data in test samples and fabrication mockups and apply the data collected to the fabrication of future high‑cost components and models.
Experience inspecting and dimensionally verifying components and models to ensure compliance with dimensions specified in drawings, specifications, and control documents.
Experience generating and delivering measurement reports per customer specifications.
Thorough understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices, including NIST.
Ability to read and work from highly detailed drawings and specifications.
Desire to learn, ask questions, and take initiative within safety and skills limitations.
Physical Demands
Office, industrial and construction settings; the work requires the employee to spend most of the day standing, kneeling, or sitting in awkward positions. Requires lifting up to 80 lbs and working from ladders, scaffolds, trenches, and hard‑to‑reach places by bending, stretching, and stooping.
Working Conditions
Contractor frequently works inside and outside of buildings, in cold weather or hot sun, with ventilation or respirators as necessary. Must be safety minded about themselves and others. Must check tools and equipment and ensure they are within capacity and kept in a safe working condition.
Physical: (1) Lift up to 80 lbs. (2) Work in industrial and test facility environment including cranes, fork trucks, and vehicle operations.
Hazardous Duty: Performs work in industrial settings where hazards exist. Use of engineering controls, material substitution, and personal protective equipment reduces or eliminates hazard exposure. Regular exposure to noise, electrical shock, wet surfaces, climbing. Occasional use of hazardous materials such as oils and solvents. Occasional exposure to high work and confined space.
Desired
Possess a working knowledge of machining and sheet metal processes.
Familiarity with NAVSEA, Navy, or other military standards for fabrication.
