Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) — a student loan repayment program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and the eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services Office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the announcement. Applicants pending completion of required training or license may be tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
United States Citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved VA school in the year the study was completed.
Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
Residency training: Physicians must have completed an ACGME or AOA accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification. (VA may require board certification for faculty status.) Coordinated residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other non‑US residencies with five years verified US practice.
Residents in ACGME/AOA programs who meet basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis, are not independent practitioners, and will not be privileged but have a scoped practice under supervision.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying under 15 lbs, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, bending intermittent. Both legs required. Rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Vision corrections: near 13–16 inches Jaeger 1–4; far one eye 20/20 and 20/40 other. Color discrimination. Hearing (aid may be permitted). Mental and emotional stability.

The Gastroenterologist ensures the quality and timeliness of services, customer satisfaction, and compliance with accrediting bodies such as the Joint Commission and Inspector General’s Combined Assessment Program.
Ensuring appropriate use of available resources and collaborating with other services as needed.
May be asked to complete projects related to the specialty and VA directives and policies. Projects may include clinical, administrative, or research initiatives within scope of medical and surgical departments.
Leads administrative or clinical teams for VA and provides project leadership as appropriate.
Accomplishes the Department of Veterans Affairs health‑care delivery mission. Services are subject to scrutiny by congressional interests, service organizations, the public, and the media.
Position requires a board‑certified physician in Gastroenterology who has completed an appropriate residency or fellowship.
Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support is required.
Clinical responsibilities include: evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and providing consultation for adult patients with GI disorders; ordering and interpreting diagnostic and therapeutic modalities; performing internal medicine procedures such as paracentesis and anoscopy; providing patient education; supervising and teaching medical students, residents, and trainees.
Core gastroenterology procedures: moderate sedation (requires active ACLS); flexible sigmoidoscopy; colonoscopy with/without biopsy or polypectomy, dilation without fluoroscopy, control of bleeding; EGD with/without biopsy or polypectomy, dilation without fluoroscopy, control of bleeding; capsule endoscopy.
Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm.
Compensation and Benefits

Paid Time Off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid CME).
