Base pay range $300,000.00/yr - $400,000.00/yr
Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Residency training: physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
PRPs (Physician Resident Providers) may be appointed as fully licensed physicians from accredited residency programs and may be engaged on an intermittent or fee‑basis, but are not considered independent practitioners.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred experience in EGD – Colonoscopy (reference:
qualification standard ).
Physical requirements: light lifting and carrying under 15 pounds, use of fingers, both hands, walking, standing, repeated bending intermittently; vision and hearing within specified limits; mental and emotional stability.
Duties
Maintain a 2‑page resume (resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series).
Refer to Required Documents for additional application materials.
Ensure quality and timeliness of gastroenterology services, meeting standards of accrediting bodies (e.g., Joint Commission, Inspector General’s Combined Assessment Program).
Use resources efficiently and maintain state‑of‑the‑art standards of care in specialty services.
Collaborate with other services as appropriate and may lead administrative or clinical teams aligned with VA directives and policies.
Board‑certified in Gastroenterology; complete an appropriate residency or fellowship; hold certifications in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultation for adult patients with gastrointestinal disorders; order and interpret diagnostics and therapeutic modalities.
Develop management plans for new patients and perform routine internal medicine procedures (e.g., paracentesis, anoscopy).
Provide patient education regarding diagnosis and medication management.
Supervise, teach, and involve medical students, trainees, and residents in the same setting.
Perform core gastroenterology procedures: moderate sedation (must maintain active ACLS certification), flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy with or without biopsy or polypectomy, dilation without fluoroscopy, control of bleeding, EGD with or without biopsy or polypectomy, dilation without fluoroscopy, capsule endoscopy.
Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm.
