Director of Health and Safety – Charter Contracting is a growing Boston‑based civil and environmental remediation contractor with projects across New England. As the Director of Health and Safety, this highly visible role spends most of its time in the field, observing work, coaching teams, and reinforcing best practices across active jobsites to ensure a culture of safety throughout the organization.
Responsibilities Safety Leadership
Lead Charter’s safety vision, culture, and programs to achieve best‑in‑class results.
Serve as the company‑wide ambassador for Health & Safety and primary liaison to senior leadership.
Oversee Safety Blueprinting goals and ensure field teams follow all safety standards and reporting requirements.
Lead and oversee all incident and accident investigations.
Provide safety guidance during preconstruction with Program Services, Estimating, and other departments.
Client & Partner Relations
Build strong relationships with owners, architects, engineers, and key partners.
Operational Excellence
Lead planning meetings to identify safety risks and assist in emergency response and site safety plans.
Support SSHOs with audits, safety records, JHAs, and safety survey strategies (air, noise, ergonomics).
Ensure full compliance with EM385‑1‑1, OSHA 1910/1926, EPA, and DOT requirements.
Develop and maintain core safety programs including Respiratory Protection, Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Fall Protection, PPE, Hazard Communication, First Aid/CPR, Excavation & Trenching, and other required programs.
Forecast annual safety‑related staffing and equipment needs.
Qualifications
10–15 years of relevant safety experience, preferably in construction or environmental operations.
Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety, Construction Management, Environmental Science, or related field (preferred).
Strong knowledge of OSHA, EM385‑1‑1, and other applicable safety regulations.
Experience leading accident investigations and managing subcontractor safety.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficient in Microsoft Office.
Ability to lead decisively in emergencies and work effectively under pressure.
Valid driver’s license; ability to pass a background check.
OSHA 30‑hour, First Aid/CPR certification, and 40‑hour HAZWOPER training required.
Familiarity with government contracting requirements.
Ability to obtain Hazmat/Respirator Medical Clearance and TWIC credentials.
