The Director of Nursing, Inpatient Hospital is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and coordination of nursing services within the Institute’s oncology inpatient hospital. The Nursing Director (ND) at Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute is a pivotal leadership role, reporting to the Senior Nurse Director. This position carries 24‑hour accountability for operational leadership of inpatient nursing services, ensuring the delivery of exceptional, compassionate, and patient‑ and family‑centered care. The Nursing Director fosters a culture of excellence, collaboration, equity, and continuous improvement while aligning nursing practice with DFCI’s mission, values, and Professional Practice Model. This role ensures the delivery of high‑quality patient care by developing and implementing nursing policies, procedures, and best practices. The Director leads and mentors a diverse team of nursing professionals, fostering their professional growth and maintaining a supportive work environment. Collaborating extensively with interdisciplinary teams and other departments, the Director optimizes patient outcomes and enhances service delivery. This position plays a critical role in strategic planning, promotes a culture of continuous improvement, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.
Location Requirement DFCI guidelines state that employees must reside in New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.
Leadership And Team Management Effective leadership in nursing involves creating a positive work environment through direction and supervision, implementing strategies to boost staff morale and retention, conducting regular performance evaluations with constructive feedback to set clear expectations and goals. Change Management, Innovation, and Quality Improvement Lead initiatives to implement new programs and technologies that enhance patient care and operational efficiency, with staff engagement as key to successful change processes. Utilize data analysis to identify areas for improvement, engage in quality assurance programs to ensure adherence to evidence‑based practices and regulatory requirements, and optimize budget management and resource allocation to maintain quality without compromising efficiency.
Promote a Culture Of Patient‑Centered Care Promote patient‑centered care through initiatives to improve satisfaction and experience, advocate for patient rights, and foster open communication among staff. Recognize and reward excellence in nursing practice by encouraging a culture of safety and excellence, ensuring ethical considerations are prioritized in care delivery.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Leadership skills in nursing including mentoring and developing staff and leaders, team building, and conflict resolution; strong collaboration and communication skills essential for building relationships across disciplines and conveying information effectively; organizational skills involving aligning nursing services with strategic goals, managing priorities, and navigating dynamic environments.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees required, one of which must be in Nursing.
Registered Nurse with 3‑5 years’ experience in health care, with progressive administrative experience.
License, Certification, and Registration Required
Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and/or New Hampshire as applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degrees in Nursing Administration, Healthcare Management, or related field.
Oncology experience preferred.
Leadership, Oncology, or Research Nursing certification preferred (required to obtain within 2 years of employment).
Pay Transparency Statement The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications. For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
$215,400 – $230,200
