As part of the EASS eCMS program supporting modernization and sustainment of VA acquisition systems, the Database Engineer designs, optimizes, and supports database schemas, stored procedures, queries, and data logic to ensure efficient, scalable, and reliable data access across enterprise applications. The role collaborates with DBAs, developers, analysts, and architects to maintain reliable, efficient database structures aligned with system requirements.
Duties And Responsibilities
Design normalized schemas, tables, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, and views.
Develop efficient SQL queries and scripts supporting application and integration needs.
Conduct performance tuning and optimization to address system bottlenecks.
Document database structures, data mappings, entity relationships, and logic.
Support integration workflows through stored procedures and optimized query logic.
Conduct impact analysis for database changes including dependencies and performance implications.
Collaborate with DBAs to ensure consistency and reliability of database environments.
Troubleshoot and resolve database-related defects or performance issues.
Assist developers and analysts with data modeling and query development.
Knowledge And Skills Required
Minimum of five (5) years of SQL Server database engineering or SQL development experience.
Strong proficiency with T‑SQL, indexing, stored procedures, and schema design.
Understanding of relational modeling and normalization principles.
Experience troubleshooting performance issues and optimizing queries.
Strong documentation and analytical skills.
Ability to collaborate across technical teams.
Knowledge And Skills Desired
Experience working with Federal agencies, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Experience supporting analytics or reporting environments.
Familiarity with refactoring, database modernization, or migration strategies.
Knowledge of automated schema deployment or versioning tools.
Experience working in environments built on Azure, .NET, SQL Server, IIS, and related VA enterprise technologies.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
Clearance Must be able to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
Work Location Remote
