Overview The Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of 57 National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County.
MCC is a consortium partnership that includes UC San Diego (41 departments, six schools), the UCSD Health Oncology Network, San Diego State University, and the La Jolla Institute of Immunology. The center seeks to reduce cancer’s burden through research, patient care, education, and community outreach.
The MCC has appointed a new senior leadership team under Director Diane Simeone, MD., and is seeking an Associate Director for Administration and Strategic Partnerships (ADA) to support the MCC 2024‑2029 strategic plan.
Key Responsibilities
Provide financial and administrative leadership for large, interdisciplinary research departments or centers with clinical subdivisions.
Oversee the CCSG grant, strategic affiliations with drug development and industry partners, and space and shared resources management.
Partner with the MCC Director, senior leadership, UC San Diego Health System, and School of Medicine to advance MCC’s national eminence.
Strategic Planning
Execute, refine, and evaluate the MCC 2024‑2029 strategic plan.
Maintain strategic alignment across MCC consortium partners and foster synergies with UCSD, SDSU, and LJI.
Develop and support new strategic affiliations and philanthropic, community outreach, and public‑relations efforts.
Support the MCC Director in advancing research, patient care, education, and training objectives.
Administration
Direct comprehensive business affairs: human resources, operations, finance, budget, Clinical Trials Office, and overall administrative structure.
Develop organizational structure, job roles, recruitment, compensation, and employee development.
Collaborate with clinical administrators to integrate research and clinical enterprise activities.
Lead IT strategic initiatives and manage space allocation for research activities.
Oversee External Advisory Board visits, leadership retreats, and scientific retreats.
Fiscal Management
Provide financial oversight for MCC, including CCSG, institutional, and philanthropic funds.
Manage expenditures, financial projections, and forecasting for academic activities.
Prepare budget reports for the MCC Director and UCSD Health as required.
Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) Oversight
Lead the CCSG, covering basic research programs (Cancer Signaling and Biology, Structural and Functional Genomics), clinical research programs (Hematologic Malignancies, Solid Tumor Therapeutics), population sciences, Clinical Trials Office, Community Outreach, Training, and eight Shared Resources.
Serve as primary contact with the NCI Program Director and other NCI‑designated centers.
Manage submission of annual progress reports, renewal applications, and final reports.
Maintain systems for tracking CCSG data, membership, grants, and publications.
Oversee Shared Resource administration to ensure value‑added services and cutting‑edge technologies for members.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in health services, business administration, or a science‑related field and eight years of relevant experience, or 12 years of combined relevant experience and training.
Excellent interpersonal, leadership, strategic planning, financial analysis, HR, project management, and negotiation skills.
Strong organizational, analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities.
Experienced in research administration, grant stewardship, change management, and compliance with laws/regulations.
Proven ability to inspire, collaborate, and lead diverse teams in a complex, multi‑site environment.
Strong written, verbal, and grant‑writing communication skills.
Experience guiding future leaders and managing performance improvements in ambiguous settings.
Business acumen with deep understanding of academic health systems and NCI‑designated comprehensive cancer centers.
Preferred Qualifications
Five or more years of progressive leadership experience in cancer research administration.
Leadership experience within an NCI‑designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, including CCSG activities.
Advanced budgeting and finance experience in cancer center and research administration.
Special Conditions
Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
Must be able to work various hours and locations as business needs dictate.
Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $168,800 – $341,200 (prorated if appointment
Hourly Equivalent: $80.84 – $163.41
Compensation is determined by experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and organizational needs.
