Sam's Club
(USA) Director, Software Engineering
Company:
Sam's Club – Location: Sunnyvale, CA
Base Pay Range $169,000.00 – $338,000.00 per year
Position Summary As Director of Software Engineering, Membership Lifecycle Growth, Data & Insights, you will lead multiple engineering teams that use modern platforms and data to accelerate member acquisition, improve renewal outcomes, and grow member value across Sam’s Club. You will translate lifecycle goals (join, renew, churn, PLUS penetration) into reliable services, data products, and experiment platforms that run at our scale.
What You’ll Do
Lead growth, data, and lifecycle engineering teams
Own the roadmap and delivery for acquisition, promo integrity, sponsored/bulk membership, and renewal flows (auto‑renew, manual renew, add‑on and guest conversions).
Align priorities with the membership lifecycle strategy and domain boundaries (Profile & Access, Subscriptions & Renewals, Growth, Platform, Data & Insights).
Build and scale lifecycle services & data platforms
Architect and deliver cloud‑native microservices, APIs, and data pipelines that power join, renewal, and churn‑reduction experiences across digital and in‑club channels.
Partner with various domain stakeholders and platform teams to consume flexible membership capabilities (multi‑tenant, multi‑tier, dynamic pricing) without fragmenting the platform.
Maximize renewal and transaction success through technology
Own the technical strategy and execution for initiatives like Sam’s Cash as a tender, recurring payment modernization (UPP migration, tokenization, CAU), intelligent retry strategies, and high‑risk payment controls.
Use experimentation and analytics to improve overall renewal rate, first‑year retention, and PLUS penetration.
Drive engineering, SRE, and data excellence
Establish and track DORA, SRE, and OE/EE metrics (SLAs, availability, deployment frequency, MTTR, CFR, code coverage, cloud efficiency) for lifecycle services and data products.
Implement robust observability and data quality governance so lifecycle decisions are made on trustworthy data.
Grow and develop high‑performing teams
Manage managers and senior ICs across 3+ domains; clarify ownership and OKRs so each team has a crisp slice of the lifecycle funnel.
Recruit, coach, and retain diverse engineering talent; model Walmart leadership expectations (Respect the Individual, Act with Integrity, Serve our Customers/Members, Strive for Excellence).
What You’ll Bring
At least 8 years in software engineering with leading managers and senior ICs, ideally at system‑level scope: multiple platforms/services, cross‑team dependencies, and high business impact.
Deep experience in distributed systems and data – proven track record building and operating high‑scale microservices, APIs, and data pipelines in a cloud environment (observability, reliability, cost optimization, security/compliance).
Lifecycle, subscription, or payments domain fluency – hands‑on experience with at least one of: subscriptions/renewals, loyalty/membership, digital payments, or transaction‑success optimization (tokenization, retries, BIN controls, payment routing).
Data‑driven and experimentation‑first mindset – comfort using KPIs and experimentation to guide roadmap decisions (renewal rate, recurring payments success, churn, join‑to‑paid conversion, PLUS penetration).
Strong partnership with Analytics and Data Engineering to define metrics, dashboards, and guardrails.
People and culture builder – demonstrated ability to build inclusive, high‑performing teams; coach leaders; and create clear growth paths.
Minimum Qualifications
Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area AND 6 years of experience in software engineering or related area.
Option 2: 8 years of experience in software engineering or related area.
