Business Development Manager at Tatum by Randstad We are seeking a
detail-oriented Job Cost Accountant
with a proven track record in financial analysis to join the finance team of a rapidly expanding construction company. This role is critical in providing financial clarity during a period of aggressive growth, driven by key acquisitions.
The primary focus is on
tracking, analyzing, and reporting on project/job costs
to ensure accurate financial statements, effective revenue recognition, and reliable financial insights that drive critical business decisions. The ideal candidate must have direct, recent experience in construction and be accustomed to managing complex project cost data.
Key Responsibilities Project Cost Accounting & Control
Maintain meticulous job cost records, including direct labor, materials, subcontractors, and allocated overhead.
Review, reconcile, and perform in-depth
variance analysis
on project costs against established budgets.
Ensure all costs are allocated correctly and align with internal policies and
GAAP .
Collaborate closely with Project Management to review budgets, cost-to-complete forecasts, and progress billing milestones.
Execute the monthly job cost closing process, including preparing and analyzing
Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules .
Financial Analysis, Reporting, and Acquisition Support
Prepare comprehensive financial performance reports (e.g., job profitability analysis, margin analysis, actual vs. budget/forecast comparisons).
Analyze cost trends and proactively identify financial risks or strategic opportunities affecting project profitability and overall business performance.
Assist with accurate
revenue recognition , margin projections, and cash flow modeling, particularly in the context of integration following acquisitions.
Develop and present clear, actionable financial insights and recommendations to senior management.
Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Coordination
Contribute to the development and refinement of job cost tracking tools, dashboards, and internal controls.
Support annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes.
Coordinate extensively with Accounts Payable, Procurement, and Project Management teams to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timely flow of financial data.
Requirements Experience & Education
Must have 3+ years of direct Job Cost Accounting or Project Accounting experience within a construction company.
Proven ability to manage and analyze project cost structures ($project cost).
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
Experience with financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
Location & Travel
This role requires a regular, predictable presence on construction sites/offices for financial review and collaboration.
Must be able to work on-site in
Northern/Central New Jersey (4 days per month) .
Must be able to work on-site in
Long Island, NY (4 days per month) .
Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel ; working knowledge of major ERP/project accounting systems (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage 300/Intacct, NetSuite, SAP).
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into clear findings for non-financial stakeholders.
Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and time management skills.
