St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin (SVdP) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people in Marin County with food, housing, and crisis assistance. Founded in 1946, SVdP operates a free dining room, a homeless outreach team, and a housing and crisis assistance program that serves over 8,000 people annually.
Position Overview The Staff Accountant plays an essential role in supporting day‑to‑day financial operations. This exempt position assists with general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, financial reporting, payroll processing, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The role also provides administrative and logistical support to the Audit and Finance Committees of the Board and works closely with the CFO and other departments to ensure accurate, transparent, and timely financial information.
Primary Responsibilities
Maintain accurate records of accounts payable and receivable, including county contract processing requirements
Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger
Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations
Track and reconcile restricted and unrestricted funds
Monitor accounts payable vendor invoices to ensure accuracy
Assist with preparation for annual audits
Collaborate with program and operational staff to ensure financial accuracy of program expenditures
Assist with preparation of financial statements and grant reporting
Support annual budget preparation and variance analysis
Help prepare and share accurate financial data to support departmental budgeting, grant applications, and reporting needs
Help prepare funder reports and ensure required financial documentation is accurate and submitted on time
Maintain a basic understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
Prepare and process biweekly payroll and coordinate with Human Resources using the Paylocity payroll software
Assist in maintaining internal controls and provide input on process improvements when appropriate
Serve as backup support to the Development team in batching gifts and donations
Track and maintain an up‑to‑date list of in‑kind gifts and donations
Support finance processes and follow established procedures as assigned by the CFO
Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO or organizational leadership

At least 2 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; QuickBooks experience preferred
Experience with donation software (e.g., eTapestry, Blackbaud) preferred
Familiarity with payroll processing and Paylocity software preferred
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and confidentiality in handling financial data
Collaborative nature with organizational and project management skills
Adaptability to shifting priorities and ability to work with uncertainty
