Chief Financial Officer

The Opportunity Kents Hill School seeks a dynamic and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide financial expertise, operational excellence, and a forward‑thinking approach to the overall administration of the school. The CFO will work directly with the Head of School, the strategic leadership team, the Business Office team, and the Board of Trustees’ Finance, Investment, and Facilities Committee.
Responsibilities include managing financial resources, overseeing accounting functions, preparing budgets and forecasts, leading risk management and compliance, supervising a small team, and serving as the staff liaison to various Board committees.
The Candidate The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader with strong management, organizational, and integrity skills. The role requires personal accountability and effective teamwork within the school’s community‑focused environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Manage the school’s financial resources in partnership with the Head of School.
Supervise Business Office personnel and oversee accounting functions.
Lead the development and implementation of the annual operating budget.
Prepare long‑term financial forecasts and maintain the financial model.
Coordinate fundraising and enrollment revenue goals.
Prepare accurate and timely financial reports.
Serve as liaison to the investment fund manager and Board committee.
Ensure policies mitigate enterprise risk.
Oversee cash, investments, loans, credit facilities, and asset management.
Maintain cash reserves and manage endowment funds.
Implement internal controls and policies.
Coordinate major construction projects with the COO.
Develop contingency plans for crisis scenarios.
Oversee annual financial audits and 403(b) audits.
Ensure compliance filings such as Form 990 and 5500.
Personnel Management
Supervise Human Resources personnel and ensure consistent alignment with strategic goals.
Ensure retirement plans, health, and disability insurance align with financial priorities.
Secure HR information to appropriate stakeholders.
Provide salary comparisons and coordinate employment contracts.
Risk Management & Operations
Partner with the COO on campus safety, regulatory compliance, and liability reduction.
Implement data security protocols.
Coordinate facilities maintenance and special projects.
Maintain insurance coverage and risk policies.
Serve as liaison with school attorneys.
Stay informed about emerging financial risks and regulatory changes.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or related field.
Experience in independent schools is beneficial.
At least five years as CFO or Business Officer, with managerial experience preferred.
Advanced Excel and analysis skills; experience across technology platforms.
Demonstrated effectiveness in working with Trustees, employees, and external constituents.
Experience with external auditors and internal controls.
Collaborative, accessible leadership approach.
