Job Description Summary Nationwide Trial Division is a national team with approximately 40 offices across six regions of the United States. As a Senior Trial Attorney, you will represent clients under both commercial and personal lines insurance policies independently as lead counsel and as part of a larger team as needed. Your caseload will typically include a mix of cases of varying complexity, severity, product lines, and specialized concentrations throughout all courts and agencies in the assigned jurisdiction(s). You’ll maintain a highly productive case volume, embracing technology and a proactive approach to case management.
Key Responsibilities
Demonstrate trial advocacy skills independently as lead counsel or as part of a team, ensuring efficiency, proactive case management, strong work ethic, and high‑quality case handling in accordance with Nationwide Trial Division (NTD) standard methodology guidelines.
Work with minimal managerial oversight, guiding your core duties based on NTD leadership expectations.
Utilize technology effectively and collaborate with support staff to ensure efficient case management.
Stay current with changes to law, technology, local rules, and other legal and insurance industry developments that may impact litigation strategies.
Apply subject matter expertise and trial advocacy skills across all NTD concentrations held; be willing to develop additional concentrations as required.
Provide factually, legally, and analytically sound opinions on case valuations, communicating updates to clients and claims teams promptly.
Establish strong professional relationships with key associates within the Office of the Chief Legal Officer, claims partners, and peers in the legal and insurance industries.
Leverage these relationships to build and enhance NTD’s reputation and expand case referral opportunities within the enterprise.
Communicate consistently and proactively in both written and verbal formats, meeting client, claims, and internal NTD expectations.
Serve as a mentor for junior attorneys and NTD staff, providing guidance, training, and serving as a role model in engagement, coaching, efficiency, attitude, and collaboration.
Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
License/Certification:
Maintain an active license in the state with which the position is located.
Experience:
Typically more than eight years of relevant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or sub‑rogation.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Significant litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or sub‑rogation; experience with complex legal practices across all courts and agencies; high‑quality written and verbal communication; collaboration with staff and attorneys, both on‑site and remotely; mentorship capability; strong negotiation, analytical, and legal skills; adaptability to changes in law and technology; excellent time‑management and organization; resourceful problem‑solving.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences, may take precedence.
Employment Conditions Overtime Eligibility:
Not Eligible (Exempt)
Working Conditions:
Generally a normal office environment, with occasional remote work. Frequent travel and occasional overnight travel. Extended hours may be required. Must have a valid driver’s license with satisfactory record.
Credit/Background Check Due to fiduciary accountabilities, a valid credit check and/or background check will be required as part of the selection process.
