Staff Attorney, EDCAP Unit OVERVIEW : For more than 50 years, Legal Services of Long Island (formerly Nassau Suffolk Law Services) has provided free, high‑quality legal counsel in civil matters for low‑income individuals and families, addressing issues such as eviction, foreclosure, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, and consumer fraud. We are the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, supporting thousands who cannot afford an attorney.

OFFICE LOCATION : Nassau County (Hempstead Office) and Suffolk County (Islandia Office).

JOB DESCRIPTION : LSLI has partnered with the Community Service Society (CSS) to offer the Education Debt Consumer Assistance Program (EDCAP), focused on helping consumers navigate student‑loan debt.

Represent low‑income debtors in consumer law matters including car loans, credit cards, medical debt, and student loan issues.

Handle cases from intake through investigation, negotiation, trial, and appeal as necessary.

Maintain required case files, client data, and all statistical information.

Provide community education regarding student‑loan repayment, counseling borrowers, and assisting the Supervising Attorney with debt litigation matters.

Offer assistance via phone, remote video conferencing, and in‑person meetings, helping clients select repayment plans, consolidate loans, apply for forgiveness or discharge programs, and avoid default.

Prepare and deliver training materials and presentations to consumers and advocates.

Assist with student‑debt litigation and provide support for related legal services.

START DATE : Immediate (Union scale).

BENEFITS : Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Long‑Term Disability (100% of the premium covered by employer), 403(b) with defined contribution, Student Loan Reimbursement (subject to collective agreement) at 1‑year anniversary.

REQUIREMENTS :

Admission to the New York State Bar and admission or eligibility for admission to the Federal Bar.

Pending admission after passing the State Bar exam also considered.

Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English preferred.

Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program.
