Job Summary Responsible for the supervision and safety of all campers in the City of Evanston Junior Lifeguard Camp.

Essential Functions

Ability to work all nine (9) weeks of camp from June 8-August 9 and assist at lakefront until Labor Day (September 7) or until return to school.

Adhere to staff policies including but not limited to time off request, attendance, and uniform policies.

Know and enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to the Evanston Lakefront.

Use proper surveillance techniques to guard the swimming area.

Identify patrons in need of emergency assistance and respond appropriately.

Maintain a safe environment and supervise all campers.

Know and adhere to all boating regulations and safety measures.

Conduct camp and teach all designated lesson plans.

Attend staff training sessions.

Responsible for effective and appropriate communication to patrons and camp parents.

Attend staff meetings as scheduled by aquatic camp director or program manager.

Maintain a clean and safe beach and office environment.

Responsible for care and maintenance of equipment and storage areas.

Complete written reports such as accident, incident and the like on a timely basis.

Communicate to supervisor(s) if there are problems or issues needing special attention.

Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge in basic sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat driving.

Assist with pre and post‑season maintenance‑related tasks as assigned.

Prerequisites for Employment

Current Certifications in Lifeguard Training, CPR, AED and First‑Aid.

Available mid‑May through Labor Day.

Preferred age 18+ years.

At least one year as a lifeguard with the City of Evanston.

Pre‑employment Drug/Alcohol Test.

Criminal and DCFS Background Check.

Hours and Schedule Varies, Monday‑Friday 8:30 am‑5 pm with occasional weekends and holidays up to 40 hrs/week, including pre‑ and post‑season lifeguarding.

Minimum Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Minimum Language Ability:

Read:

Ability to read staff manuals, memoranda, and attendance sheets.

Write:

Ability to complete daily log sheets, accident reports, incident reports, jump reports, first‑aid reports using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, and style.

Speak:

Ability to give verbal direction to subordinates, communicate effectively with co‑workers, supervisors, citizens, and the public as well as other employers; speaking extemporaneously on a variety of subjects.

Training:

Completed at least 1 year of high school; Complete all preseason training.

Physical Demands:

Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.

acuity‑far: clarity of vision at 20 feet or more

depth perception: ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are

field of vision: observing an area that can be seen up and in a given point

accommodation: adjustment of the lens of the eyes to bring an object into a sharp focus, especially important when doing near‑point work at varying distances from the eye

color vision: ability to identify and distinguish colors

Working Conditions:

Ability to lift, kneel, bend, stand for long periods of time, identify or distinguish colors, and work outdoors at night with limited lighting.

Environmental Conditions:

Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions such as rain, high temperatures, and humidity. Work environment includes beaches, recreation centers, multipurpose rooms, swimming pools, athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, and office space.

Hazards:

The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions approximately 5% of the time and outside work 95% of the time with no effective protection from weather conditions or temperature changes.

pen, pencil, ruler, blueprints, charts, contracts, diagrams, directives, documents, forms, manuals, publications, reference books, schedules, and specifications.
