Departmental Overview Under the executive sponsorship of the Vice Chancellor of Equity & Inclusion, the Thriving Initiatives provide leadership and consultation on policies, projects, and programs across campus. The Asian Pacific American Student Development (APASD) Office supports undergraduate and graduate student needs, creates academic community, and fosters understanding of Asian American, Pacific Islander, and intersectional identities. APASD is part of the Centers for Educational Justice and Community Engagement (EJCE), a collaborative charged with promoting student success through intersectional practices.
Position Summary Involves assessing organizational and strategic issues regarding the Asian American & Pacific Islander Thriving Initiatives (AAPITI) and providing guidance through organizational development solutions such as facilitating assessments, strategic planning, culture‑change, and sustainable approaches to enhance institutional performance. Consults with leaders, departments, and committees to address root causes of organizational effectiveness issues using a systematic approach. Analyzes current organizational purpose, structure, relationships, policies, systems, and data. Recommends and facilitates improvements ensuring alignment with organizational strategy.

Responsibilities Program Design, Management, Supervision
Provides leadership and vision for all APASD and AAPITI initiatives. Designs, develops, oversees, and evaluates major initiatives and complex programs to address systemic barriers that impede students’ curricular and co‑curricular success.
Develops a multi‑year strategic plan and budget. Manages APASD and AAPITI budgets as well as active external grants, including administering the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) grants; monitors spending, conducts evaluation, and makes budget adjustments.
Oversees the management and cultivation of Pacific Islander and Asian American community offices, centers, and spaces.
Collaborates with EJCE team members and other Division of Equity & Inclusion staff to develop innovative strategies to address racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia/heterosexism, and other forms of exclusion.
Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with campus offices and entities (e.g., Residential & Student Services, Ethnic Studies, University Health Services, Financial Aid, Registrar). Develops and teaches courses for credit in partnership with Ethnic Studies or other academic departments.
Develops strategic initiatives and joint academic initiatives with Ethnic Studies, the Asian American Research Center, and affiliated faculty. Sponsors field study courses and orientation seminars exploring histories, identities, and contemporary issues for AA & PI communities.
Builds relationships with off‑campus community organizations to connect students to broader AA & PI communities. Develops shared programs increasing resources, internships, and professional development opportunities.
Supervises all APASD & AAPITI career staff, including assistant directors and interns. Leads recruitment, selection, and training; provides direction and timely feedback.
Campus, UC, and Community Leadership & Consultation
Provides expert guidance to senior leaders on academic, student development, and climate issues.
Serves as subject matter expert on cross‑cultural, intersectional, and multicultural programs and initiatives.
Advises senior administrators on strategic planning and implementation related to AA & PI Thriving Initiatives.
Responds to inquiries from students, staff, faculty, and community members.
Participates in policy development for recruitment and retention of students.
Reports current and emerging state and federal policies or events that may impact communities.
Engages in practices that enhance the campus experience and limit liability exposure.
Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and stewardship of University resources.
Leads cross‑functional teams to solve complex organizational issues.
Convenes activity and ensures coordination across campus entities to align transformation initiatives.
Development & External Partnerships
Plans and utilizes federal, state, University, and agency funds.
Collaborates with UDAR on strategies to sustain and grow funding for AA & PI Thriving Initiatives.
Coordinates annual efforts for Titles III and V programs with the U.S. Department of Education.
Maintains liaison and communication for grant and resource development.
Participates in local, regional, and national professional organizations that support grant and research development.
Other Duties as Assigned
Special projects; membership in divisional and campus committees and work teams.
Professional development: keeps abreast of trends in equity practices, multicultural education, identity development, higher education policy, conflict transformation, and more.
Required Qualifications
Expert level skills in gathering, organizing, and analyzing programs and initiatives with campus‑wide impact.
Advanced verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.
Expert political and organizational acumen.
Expert knowledge of campus policies; quick learning ability.
Effective communication at all levels; consulting experience with managers and groups.
Ability to coach, facilitate, and influence people at all levels.
Experience with historically underrepresented communities and conflict resolution.
Extensive experience in multicultural competencies and crisis intervention.
Advanced experience in group dynamics, solidarity building, facilitation, and leadership training.
Strong problem identification, judgment, decision‑making, and critical thinking skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across all organizational levels.
Excellent organizational and resource‑management skills.
Familiarity with personnel policies and practices.
Skills in managing financial, information, technology, and space resources.
Discretion and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws.
Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits The University of California, Berkeley will pay an annual salary in the range $145,000.00 – $165,000.00 for this exempt, monthly‑paid position. For information on benefits, visit the University of California Compensation & Benefits website.
