This recruitment is part of the Operation Hire Hawaii (OH‑HI) project, a targeted outreach initiative featuring an expedited hiring process and fast‑tracking qualified applicants into job opportunities throughout Hawai‘i.

Salary Levels Level II – $4,590 per month (SR‑18, Step D)

Level III – $4,961 to $6,043 per month (SR‑20, Step D to I)

Temporary Positions Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent and other temporary positions. Job Purpose Microbiologists supervise and/or perform professional scientific work in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and control of microorganisms.

Responsibilities by Level Microbiologist II:

Performs a variety of assignments in the field of microbiology, initially geared toward providing experience and training in the application of basic professional knowledge and abilities.

Microbiologist III:

Independently performs the full range of microbiological work in one or more areas. The position may also be assigned to research and investigational projects to carry out major segments under the guidance of a microbiologist in overall charge, or may direct and oversee the work of lower level personnel and perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements Legal Authorization to Work The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Basic Education A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in microbiology, biology, molecular biology, molecular cell biology, medical technology, medical laboratory science, or a closely related science major.

Required Coursework

Chemistry such as inorganic, qualitative, organic, or similar.

At least two (2) subject areas related to the study of microorganisms, including but not limited to:

Bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, molecular biology, molecular cell biology or virology;

Food, water, dairy, soil, industrial, public health, agriculture, or applied bacteriology; or applied microbiology;

Genetics, physiology, metabolism, animal or plant physiology or pathology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry.

Note: To be creditable, the focus and content of the course must have been substantively devoted to the required subject area.

All of the above coursework must be closely related to the study of microorganisms and must include physical and mathematical sciences such as inorganic, qualitative, quantitative and organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, college algebra, or statistics.

Specialized Experience Microbiologist II:

None required.

Microbiologist III:

One year of professional experience in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and/or control of microorganisms. Such experience may have been gained in scientific disciplines such as bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, virology, or other related areas of science.
