We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Director to join our firm in Boston. The HR Director provides overall leadership to the firm’s human resources function as well as provides oversight for legal support and administration in the Boston and London offices, leading an overall team of approximately 32 professionals. In this role, the HR Director oversees the firm’s benefit programs, hiring and onboarding of administrative staff, employee engagement and well‑being, performance and compensation reviews for administrative staff, employment policies, administrative support for attorneys and facilities for the Boston and London offices.
Duties and responsibilities
Provide overall leadership and direction to Human Resources Department including direct management of four HR professionals.
Direct and oversee administration of the firm’s benefit programs including leading three annual benefit renewals and open enrollment events for our Boston, New York, Washington D.C., and London offices.
Direct the firm’s annual performance and compensation review process for all administrative staff. Advise administrative leadership team on compensation, performance and employee relations matters.
Responsible for the budgeting and the management of the HR Department’s P&L as well as all compensation-related issues for the firm’s legal administrative staff.
Work closely with the firm’s Chief Operating Officer and Managing Partner on employment matters and other projects/initiatives.
Direct and oversee recruiting and onboarding processes for all administrative staff. Partner with the Chief Marketing and Talent Officer (CM&TO) and Director of Legal Recruiting on onboarding attorneys.
Monitor and support employee engagement and well‑being for all offices through planning and supporting reward and recognition programs, office events, employee surveys and wellness initiatives.
Oversee exit interview and offboarding processes, gathering and incorporating feedback as appropriate.
Oversee employment policy development and management, consulting with firm leadership as appropriate.
Partner closely with the Finance/Payroll team to ensure timely and accurate processing of pay for all U.S.-based employees (semi-monthly) and partners (monthly) and London office (monthly).
Ensure that the firm is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations across all of our office locations including ensuring timely completion of required training and filings.
Direct and provide guidance to employees and partners on visa and immigration matters in partnership with external counsel.
Oversee administration and facility management for the Boston office, working closely with One Post Office Square building and security management as well as our Williams Lea office services team. Review and update building and security related policies and ensure that regular health and safety training is conducted.
Provide overall leadership to Boston office support team including all Legal Administrative Assistants, Conference Center Specialist and Senior Facilities Administrator.
Manage, coach and mentor assigned staff; conduct regular team and 1:1 meetings.
Qualifications
BA/BS or equivalent experience
Minimum 20 years of experience in all aspects of Human Resources, preferably in a law firm or professional services firm with a partnership structure.
Experience managing and developing large teams of professionals at varying experience levels.
Strong knowledge of employee relations and performance management best practices.
Strong knowledge of and experience with negotiating and managing benefit programs including health, dental and vision insurance, short and long-term disability and retirement plans.
Strong knowledge of and experience with HR-related laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions (UK experience a plus).
Ability to build trusted relationships with all levels of professionals at the firm, including senior partners.
Ability to work collaboratively with peers across administrative departments.
Strong computer skills, particularly MS Office including Excel and PowerPoint.
Experience working with HR systems, ADP experience preferred.
Ability to work independently and apply judgment and discretion when working through complex and ambiguous situations.
Strong oral and written communications skills
The estimated starting base salary range for this position is $225,000 - $260,000 . This estimate is based on our current market data, and the final offer will depend on the selected candidate's experience, qualifications, and other relevant factors.
