Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the STEM specialist provides program leadership, child development, and direct supervision to the STEM program. Responsibilities include developing and renewing the camp STEM curriculum, assisting with the implementation of a quality camp program, and ensuring safety and welfare of campers.
Key Responsibilities
Prioritize safety and emotional well‑being of campers, parents, and staff.
Create and implement a themed STEM curriculum with appropriate choices, using STEM to promote healthy activity and creative thinking.
Document STEM curriculum and keep examples for future years.
Plan and execute recreational and educational programs that emphasize group participation.
Create an active, engaging environment and model YMCA values as a positive role model.
Maintain staff discipline using constructive methods and positive reinforcement.
Communicate clearly with counselors and supervisors, keeping a direct line open.
Report accidents or unusual incidents immediately and document required details.
Assist in coordinating camp activities, including special events and extended hours.
Attend all staff meetings and training sessions, applying training materials daily.
Maintain program areas, supplies, and equipment; keep inventory and report needs.
Assist with pre‑ or post‑care and transportation as assigned.
Perform other duties as required, remaining flexible and supportive.
Adhere to YMCA/DPH/ACA day camp policies and guidelines.
Available up to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for an eight‑hour shift between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
At least 21 years of age.
High school diploma or equivalent; some college experience preferred, with preference for STEM education or a STEM degree.
Experience working with children and ability to understand their needs and set appropriate boundaries.
Commitment to working with participants from diverse backgrounds.
Strong understanding of group process and ability to collaborate harmoniously with staff.
Commitment to YMCA mission, camp philosophy, and goals.
Effective communication skills.
Current First Aid, Oxygen administration, and CPR certifications (and any other certifications required for the specific camp).
