Position Summary Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the STEM specialist provides program leadership, child development, and direct supervision to the STEM program. Responsible for developing/renewing the camp STEM program and assisting with the implementation of a quality camp program as a whole. Activities should provide for growth in skills, self‑awareness, self‑expression, and group relationship building. Safety and the overall welfare of campers are of primary importance.
Key Responsibilities
Keep safety of campers as the first priority. Emphasize personal safety and emotional well‑being with campers, parents and other camp personnel at all times.
Create and implement a theme‑related STEM curriculum with an appropriate amount of choice. Utilize STEM as a medium to educate and promote healthy activity. Think outside the box.
Document STEM curriculum and keep examples for following years.
Plan and implement recreational and educational programs that emphasize group participation.
Create an active, engaging environment.
By personal example, help interpret the quality of YMCA values to campers, parents and staff. Must be a positive role model. Develop appropriate relationships with all campers in their care. Understand, establish, and abide by appropriate boundaries.
Be a staff peer leader, setting an example for how all other staff should act and present themselves.
Use positive, constructive methods of discipline/positive reinforcement, and ensure that all staff do the same. Use specific, positive praise to reinforce and teach positive behavior.
Communicate clearly and concisely expectations and needs for counselors during your period.
Keep a direct line of communication open with supervisors.
Report all accidents/unusual incidents immediately to appropriate supervisors and create necessary documentation.
Communicate program information, problems, and concerns as they occur.
Assist with the coordination of camp activities. Actively participate in and take ownership of all aspects of camp program, including special events, openings, closings, and extended hours.
Attend all staff meetings and training sessions. Become familiar with provided training materials and actively incorporate them in your day‑to‑day interactions and work with campers.
Maintain and care for all program areas and supplies. Ensure that campers treat all equipment, supplies, and camp property with respect and responsibility. Take inventory of supplies weekly and update camp directors with respect to supply needs.
Assist with pre‑ or post‑care and/or transportation as assigned. Ensure that a name to face is taken before and after any transitions.
Perform other duties as required by supervisor (remain flexible). Demonstrate a willingness to help where needed and actively seek to develop oneself.
Abide by the established YMCA/DPH/ACA day camp policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines and ask when in doubt.
Be available up to 40 hours per week Monday through Friday for an eight‑hour shift between the hours of 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
Position Requirements
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must have high school diploma or equivalent; some college, and experience preferred. Achieved or working toward a STEM education or a STEM degree preferred.
The individual should like to work with children and have the ability to work with, develop, and understand the needs of children and appropriate boundary setting.
The individual must demonstrate a commitment to working with participants from a variety of backgrounds.
Knowledge of group process – must actively work in harmony with other staff.
Must be committed to carrying out YMCA mission, camp philosophy, and goals.
Must utilize effective communication skills.
Must possess current First Aid, Oxygen administration, and CPR certifications and all others as required by the specific camp.
