Berkeley Lab’s Applied Mathematics Computational Research Division (AMCR) has an immediate opening in the Quantum Information Science and Technology Group (QuIST) for a Quantum Experimentalist Postdoctoral Fellow under the programs of Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) and Quantum System Accelerator (QSA). This position will focus on design, calibration, and operation of mid-scale digital superconducting quantum processors. These processors will implement several novel capabilities geared toward efficiency and high fidelity. Ultimately, they will be used for cutting‑edge demonstrations of quantum computing applications.

Responsibilities

Design and test novel superconducting device components compatible with extensible quantum processors

Analytical and numerical modelling of microwave quantum circuits and signals

Design and conduct state‑of‑the‑art experiments using superconducting quantum processors for quantum information science

Develop scalable calibration methodologies for quantum operations

Troubleshoot noise processes on quantum hardware and design and implement mitigation strategies

Validate, analyze, and interpret experimental data

Firmware development & programming tools to interface with FPGA-based electronics

Quantum verification and validation

Mentorship of and collaboration with student researchers

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

Experience independently planning and completing projects

Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and verbal presentation of scientific results

Knowledge of quantum information science related to one or more of the responsibilities/research areas listed above

Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students

Ability to direct the work of technical support staff or students

Experience using Python based programming tools

Desired Skills

Ability to prepare periodic updates (written and oral) for internal and external reviews or reports. This includes experience in evaluating scientific narrative, skill in technical writing, and using presentation preparation tools

Experience operating and maintaining a dilution refrigerator

Exceptional health and retirement benefits, including pension or 401K-style plans

A culture where you’ll belong – we are invested in our teams

In addition to accruing vacation and sick time, we also have a Winter Holiday Shutdown every year

Parental bonding leave (for both mothers and fathers)

We’re here for the same mission, to bring science solutions to the world. Join our team and you will play a supporting role in our goal to address global challenges! Have a high level of impact and work for an organization associated with 17 Nobel Prizes.

Additional Information Applications will be accepted until the job posting is removed.

Appointment Type This is a full-time, 3‑year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 2 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post‑degree.

Salary Range The salary range for this position is $6,924 - $8,026 and is expected to start at $6,924 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post‑Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

Background Check This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
